Not just fans, the dramatic ups and downs of Kings XI Punjab (KXIP, now Punjab Kings) used to surprise even Indian Premier League’s (IPL) former auctioneer Richard Madley, who said he “never knew” what the franchise is next upto at the bidding war.

Over the years the Punjab franchise has come to be known as an unpredictable entity at every IPL auction, one whose next move remains a thing of elusive mystery and often leaves people taken aback by their choices.

At every IPL auction, Punjab enter with a sizeable purse and give their fanbase hope of compiling a strong-built squad. Only for those hopes to soon turn into despair as the team suffers one defeat after another and faces another league-stage exit.

But while that is a familiar story for the fans, it seems that even those involved in the close functioning of the IPL find Punjab’s shenanigans at the auction table as a thing to laugh at. One of them, the ex IPL auctioneer Richard Madley says he was always hooked towards Punjab’s table, for he didn’t know what next is about to hit him.

Ex IPL auctioneer Richard Madley spoke of the Punjab franchise.

Richard Madley offers hilarious assessment of Punjab’s IPL auction dramatics

“Kings XI Punjab, as they were, my goodness me.. I never knew what was gonna happen. I had no idea who they were gonna bid for, where they are gonna start (in terms of prizing) and where they were gonna finish. And the thing is, I am not sure they did either,” Richard Madley told R Ashwin over latter’s Youtube channel in a conversation,

“The strategy, if there was one, was kept so secret that not even the person holding the paddle not necessarily seem to know it,” he added, while Ashwin, Punjab’s former skipper for seasons 2018 and 2018, tried hard to control his laughter.

At the same time, however, Richard Madley indicated he was respectful of Punjab’s choices during his time overseeing the bidding war, for they brought their own flavour to the mix. Madley said Punjab certainly made things exciting for him and gave him a set of people he could interact with in his own colourful way.

“It (Punjab’s ways) made it (the auction) interesting, it made it fun. It enabled me, the auctioneer, to have people I could participate with (engage with). I am up on stage for eight and a half hours; I have got the nation watching me,” he said.

“I needed something to happen and in some ways, I liked a little bit of controversy if there was any, or some feedback.. because (ultimately) I am looking to transact with the team owners,” he added.
