MI succumbed to their fifth consecutive loss going down to PBKS by 12 runs.

Mumbai Indians succumbed to their fifth consecutive loss of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season on Wednesday (April 14). Chasing 199 against Punjab Kings, they were in a decent position and had a chance to register their first points on the board. But unnecessary run-outs hurt the five-time champions as they ended up losing by 12 runs.

Having said that, MI didn’t start well yet again with their openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan falling early. They were behind in the steep chase until Dewlad Brevis, famously known as Baby AB, infused life into the innings, with a massive 29-run over off Rahul Chahar. He smacked four consecutive sixes with the last one being a huge 112-metre one to give hopes to his side and the fans.

The momentum had suddenly shifted in MI’s favour and a mandatory time-out was taken at the end of the ninth over. During the time-out, head coach Mahlea Jayawardene was seen having an animated chat especially with Brevis possibly motivating him to stay around in the middle till the end.

He kept giving instructions to the 18-year-old until the mentor Sachin Tendulkar hilariously dragged him off the field.

Unfortunately for MI, it wasn’t the night where they registered their first two points of the season. While Brevis got out soon after reaching his half-century, Tilak Varma and Kieron Pollard threw wickets away via run-out. Suryakumar Yadav tried his best to win the game single-handedly. But with no specialist batter at the other end, it was too much of an ask for him.

MI eventually could only reach 186 in their 20 overs and fell 12 runs short as their troubles continued in IPL 2022. On the other hand, Punjab Kings won their third game in five outings with skipper Mayank Agarwal winning the Player of the Match award for setting up the game with his fifty upfront and then leading the side well.

Punjab Kings are now at the third position in the points table with six points to their name while MI continue to languish at the bottom as they are the only team with 0 wins.
