New Zealand batting great Ross Taylor walked out to bat for the final time in international cricket on Monday (April 2). Playing the third ODI of the home series versus the Netherlands in Hamilton, Taylor bid adieu to his illustrious career, featuring over 18,000 international runs.

Taylor, whose game had been on evident decline over the past few months, had a put a timer on his international career at the start of New Zealand’s home summer. He finished his Test career with January’s home series against Bangladesh and has now brought his white-ball career to conclusion as well.

But before the 38-year-old record run-scorer for Kiwis embarked upon the second-innings of his life, he was given a befitting farewell by his New Zealand teammates and also Dutch men present in the opposition, who gave him a guard of honour upon his arrival to the crease.

Ross Taylor received a wonderful round of applause from the crowd present at the Seddon Park on his way to the playing arena at No.4. When his turn to bat came, even the dismissed batter Martin Guptill made it a point to wait and cheer for the man as he stepped on the field for his last knock.

Ross Taylor retires as New Zealand men’s highest Test and ODI run-maker.

Ross Taylor gets fitting farewell from Netherlands players and New Zealand teammates

Guptill was only echoing the sentiments of the entire New Zealand camp where all present in the dressing room stood up and congratulated the man for his glorious career. The Netherlands team then made a point to give Ross Taylor a heartening guard of honour on his way to the pitch.

That moment would’ve doubled the emotional quotient of the occasion for Taylor, who was seen crying while he stood with his teammates for the national anthem before the play began.

A wholehearted servant of New Zealand cricket, he brought to end a career that saw him being a linchpin of Kiwi batting for over 15 years.

During his career, Ross Taylor emerged as New Zealand’s highest ever Test and ODI run-getter. The resolute batter produced 7,683 runs in Tests at an average of 44.66 and made 8,607 ODI runs at 47.55 per innings. Replacing Taylor, even for a Kiwi set-up of unprecedented depth, will take some time.
