India vice-captain Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the ongoing ENG vs IND Test series after sustaining a fracture in his feet during the fourth fixture in Manchester. Previously, Pant picked up the injury while trying to reverse-sweep a Chris Woakes delivery. The incident took place in the 68th over of the first innings with the southpaw unbeaten on 37 on the opening day at The Old Trafford.

According to a BCCI source, the wicketkeeper-batter will need at least six weeks to recover from the injury. Pant’s chances to resume his innings on Day 2 are not very feasible as the batter is still struggling to walk on his own.
“The scan report showed a fracture and he is ruled out for six weeks. The medical team is trying to see if he can come out to bat again by taking a pain killer. He still needs support to walk though and chances of his batting looks very bleak,” stated the source to The Indian Express.
Reportedly, another wicketkeeper-batter, Ishan Kishan, may replace him in India’s squad for the fifth test of the series.
The 27-year-old was in blazing form in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. He had already piled up a combined 425 runs in the initial three fixtures, including two centuries and as many fifty-plus scores so far. Pant’s omission from the squad could prove to be costly for Team India, who are currently trailing 2-1 in the red-ball series.
The team’s bowling unit has already been weakened for the upcoming fifth and final Test at The Oval, due to the absence of their prime pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is currently playing his third Test of the tour. It was stated by the pacer earlier that he will feature in only three out of the five matches to manage his workload following the back injury in the latest Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series 2024-25.
India have also suffered three other setbacks recently, including the knee injury of all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, which has sidelined him from the entire series. Pacers Akash Deep Singh, who bagged a stunning ten-wicket haul at the Edgbaston, and Arshdeep Singh were also unavailable for selection for the current fixture in Manchester.
Amidst this, the latest blow of Pant’s exclusion, who was one of the strongest pillars of the current Indian batting lineup, may become a massive headache for the management throughout the final two fixtures.
