Previously, he also missed participating in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2025.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently announced the T20I and ODI squads for India’s upcoming tour of Australia. While two stalwarts of Indian cricket, former captain Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma, are set to make a comeback in the 50-over side after a long seven-month gap, star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been a notable omission from the visitors’ limited-over squad.
The gloveman is yet to recover from his fractured toe that he sustained during the fourth England vs India Test in Manchester in July 2025. Notably, the 28-year-old had resumed his innings with the injury on the second day of the penultimate fixture of the series and also brought up his 18th half-century in the format.
However, after India’s first innings, the southpaw was ruled out of the remaining red-ball tour. He was advised to take a six-week rest due to picking up a metatarsal fracture. But the keeper-batter has not yet recovered fully from the injury to feature in the Men in Blue’s next overseas assignment against the Aussies.
“His rehabilitation is progressing very slowly. Pant’s absence in the middle-order will be felt during the eight-match white-ball tour of Australia,” stated a BCCI source to Times of India.

Following the fifth and final Test of the England tour, the batter also missed participating in India’s title-winning campaign in the recently concluded eight-team subcontinental league, the ACC Asia Cup 2025. Pant has also been sidelined for the ongoing two-match home Test series against the West Indies.
With the swashbuckling player ruled out of the limited-over matches against Australia, the fans will have to wait a little longer to see him back in action. According to the aforementioned source, he is likely to make a return to the field in the first red-ball fixture against South Africa. The two-Test series will kickstart on November 14 at the Eden Gardens and is set to be followed by three ODIs and five 20-over fixtures.
However, the Men in Blue will now shift their focus into the three-match 50-over series, which will kickoff on October 19 in Perth, followed by five T20Is. The iconic duo of Rohit and Virat will don the Indian jersey since lifting the ICC Champions Trophy in March 2025. After retiring from the T20Is and Tests, the 50-over matches are currently the only format where the fans will get to witness the veteran pair.
