Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) played out a thriller at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on March 30 (Wednesday). Chasing 129, RCB almost messed it up in the final stages, but this time around, they had a cool and calm head in the middle in Dinesh Karthik who finished things off in style in the last over.
The former KKR skipper Karthik hurt his old franchise’s fans with a short but crucial knock on the day. Though Harshal Patel made things easy for him to bring it down to seven runs in the last over, with only three wickets in hand, anything could’ve happened. It is always important to get over the line in such games and Karthik made sure he got the better of his former teammat Andre Russell.
KKR skipper had his designated death bowler to do the job for the team. But Russell chose a poor delivery first up and Karthik didn’t need a second invitation to flex those muscles. The Caribbean bowled a short ball and the batter pulled the ball over deep square leg for a massive six.
The square boundaries were big but Dinesh Karthik didn’t care about it and the ball comfortably sailed into the stands. The contest in the game was over with only one run needed off the last five balls and Karthik slammed a fuller ball this time down the ground for a four to notch up RCB’s first win of the season.

RCB skipper Faf du Plessis was relieved to have won the game eventually in a low-scoring thriller. He lauded the KKR bowlers for fighting it out with a low total. However, when it came to Dinesh Karthik, the former South Africa skipper compared him to MS Dhoni in being cool during the crunch moments in the game.
“We would like to be more convincing. Just the experience. The runs were never a problem. We just needed to have wickets in hand. DK is as close as it gets to MS Dhoni when it comes to being ice cool,” Du Plessis said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
