MS Dhoni has been synonymous with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ever since he started playing for the team since the 2008 Indian Premier League (IPL). However, in the last few years, he has been a pale shadow of his glorious self. But despite his waning skills, Dhoni hasn’t lost fandom by any means. The budding cricketers still look up to him as an inspiration.
He started captaining CSK in 2008 and led them to the playoffs in 11 out of 12 editions. It was only back in 2020 that the Super Kings failed to make it through to the second round. But in 2021, the Yellow Army made a stupendous comeback and won the title for the fourth time. In the final, they defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), then led by Eoin Morgan.
The first time when CSK won the IPL was way back in 2010. They defeated the Mumbai Indians (MI) by 22 runs at the DY Patil Stadium. In the very next year, the Super Kings defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In 2016 and 2017, the Yellow Army had to face a two-year suspension period due to certain reasons.
But in 2018, CSK restamped their authority by winning the title for the third time. This time around, they defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Shane Watson became the Player of the Match for scoring a century at the iconic venue.
Then in 2019, CSK missed out by a whisker after Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated them by one run in the final at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad (SRH). After a poor campaign in 2020, the Super Kings were back at their best in 2021.

Dhoni, their talismanic skipper, in the meantime, has stepped down as the skipper of their team. He has handed over the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja, who was retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction. The 2022 IPL is set to commence on March 26 with the match between CSK and Shreyas Iyer’s Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
