Indian seamer Pooja Vastrakar took a critical catch in the closing stages of the ICC Women’s World Cup encounter against Australia on Saturday (March 19).
With the game slipping away from India’s grasp towards the end, Vastrakar showed her pressure-handling abilities and took a fine grab that sent a well-set Meg Lanning back to the pavillion.
As the equation came down to 8 runs off the last nine balls, Lanning sliced a full-pitched ball from pacer Meghna Singh to the point region looking for a single. But the impressive Pooja Vastrakar came in her way and made a swift dive to her right to complete a catch she made seem easier than it actually was.
The catch was seen on the fourth ball of the penultimate over in the Australian run-chase. The in-form Aussies were 270/3 at that point, eyeing another 8 runs to secure victory and continue their winning run in the tournament. Just then a piece of brilliance in the field from Pooja Vastrakar gave India a toe back in the contest and led to a last-minute twist in the fixture.

Vastrakar’s grab also denied Lanning a much-deserved century on the night after she guided the Australian innings beautifully for a 107-ball 97.
Unfortunately for the Indian fielder and her team, her take was still not good enough to deny Australia a victory as by the time Lanning was dismissed, she had done most of the damage in a run-chase of India’s competitive but less-than-ideal 277/7 in the first half.
Apart from her fine catch, Vastrakar scored a crucial cameo late into the Indian innings, making an unbeaten 34 off 28 balls. She also bowled an impressive 10-over spell of 2/43 in an allround display that augurs well for the rest of the tournament.
