WATCH: Abhishek Sharma’s fifty celebration cut short as replays reveal he was a run short

Abhishek Sharma had to wait an extra ball for his fifty celebrations in the IPL 2022 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings after failing to properly complete his two.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) uncapped Indian youngster Abhishek Sharma made a counterattacking half-century in an IPL 2022 game played on Saturday (April 9) afternoon against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Opening the batting in a tricky run-chase at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, the left-hander played his part in giving SRH the right start. The batter reached an unbeaten fifty in just 32 deliveries, featuring 4 fours and 2 sixes.

It was the maiden fifty of Abhishek Sharma’s rising IPL career, as the youngster showed first signs of relishing a sense of role clarity and security around his spot in the SRH set-up.

But just before he scored his 50th run, the 21-year-old was involved in a strange short-run incident, where the celebrations for his milestone had to be delayed after he returned to the batting crease without completing the first run.

The incident happened on the third ball of the 12th over in the SRH run-chase. Facing CSK pacer Chris Jordan, Abhishek Sharma hit him through the backward point region and immediately called his partner Kane Williamson for two.

Batting on 48 at the time, Abhishek made it safely back to the batting end and started raising his bat to celebrate for the fifty. Aware of the moment, the entire SRH dugout, including their players and the big-name support staff, sat up and clapped for the player.

Those celebrations, however, had to be cut short soon after the replays confirmed that Abhishek hadn’t properly got across the mark for his first run and returned to his crease without completing the attempting two.

In a moment that would’ve annoyed the youngster, the standing umpires waited to check a close-in replay of his first run and found that he had not gotten his bat crossing the crease at the bowling end.

Thankfully for Abhishek, he was able to finally secure his maiden IPL half-century on the next ball after guiding Jordan’s length delivery outside off-stump through the deep-third region.
