Delhi Capitals (DC) set to make three shock releases ahead of the IPL 2025 auction

We look at three shock releases DC might make ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.

Delhi Capitals (DC) endured a tough last cycle, for they couldn’t qualify for playoffs in any of the three editions. Last year, they could only win seven games and ended in the sixth position with 14 points.

While they couldn’t qualify for the next round, DC had several quality players, and their retention strategy will be keen to see. They will be tempted to remove a few solid options from their squad as they build for a fresh cycle.

We look at three shock releases DC might make ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.

Prithvi Shaw

Prithvi Shaw has been a massive disappointment in the last few IPL editions, for he couldn’t translate his superior talent into performances. In the previous cycle, his abysmal form was one of the biggest reasons behind DC’s poor show.

He is not worth enough to retain at this stage, and DC will be tempted to leave a project in which they invested so much. Even his recent form hasn’t been convincing enough to keep him or spend a retention price.

David Warner

David Warner’s recent downfall will be one of the biggest reasons behind his release. He only played eight games in IPL 2024 and was dropped for other players as Warner couldn’t do anything significant.

Further, he will soon be 38, meaning he can’t be a long-term investment and might not endure another cycle. It won’t be wise to invest in an ageing batter whose expertise is at an all-time low.

Anrich Nortje

Anrich Nortje was one of the retentions of Delhi Capitals during the last mega auction, and the team had high hopes for him. However, things didn’t pan out as expected as Nortje struggled with fitness and injuries, which impacted his performances.

Last season, he snared only 7 wickets, conceding at an economy rate of 13.36, and was dropped midway through the tournament. Maybe DC will remove him, for his price won’t surge as high as it would have been in the last mega auction, and if they want, the team can re-bid for him in the IPL 2025 auction.
