Varun Chakaravarthy Reveals a Technical Adjustment led to His India Comeback

He made a return to the national side for the first time in 1066 days

India and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Varun Chakravarthy made a return to international cricket for the ongoing three-match India vs Bangladesh T20I series.

Making his first appearance for the national side in 1066 days, Chakravarthy got back into the Indian team on the back of a fantastic performance in the last season of the Indian Premier League. In IPL 2024, Chakravarthy took 21 wickets and combined with Sunil Narine to guide KKR to a title win, after a gap of 10 years.

On his return to the national side, the 33-year-old took a three-wicket haul with the scalps of Towhid Hridoy (12), Jaker Ali (8) and Rishad Hossain (11) as India outclassed Bangladesh in the first T20I.

Following his stellar return, Varun Chakravathy credited a technical change in his bowling style that led to his comeback.

Speaking in the post-match press conference on the same, Chakravarthy revealed that he was not bowling the traditional side-spin anymore but had transitioned into an over-spin bowler.

“I used to be a side-spin bowler, but right now, I have completely shifted to being an over-spin bowler.”

“It’s a minute technical aspect of spin bowling, but it took me more than two years. I gradually tested it in TNPL and IPL. While the mental aspect also had to be worked on, the major chunk of effort I put in was on my technical side,” he further added.

Previously, Chakravarthy had made his debut for India in the run-up to the T20 World Cup 2021 but was dropped right after the team’s unsuccessful campaign in the United Arab Emirates.
