Brian Lara picks two young Indian batters as the most exciting to watch out for

Several young faces have come through in every format in the recent past, with a few of them making instant impacts in their respective departments.

The Indian team is currently going through a transition, especially in Tests and T20Is. The retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the shortest format and India looking past Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have tempted them to look for fresh options, and the last few series have been a step in the same direction.

Several young faces have come through in every format in the recent past, with a few of them making instant impacts in their respective departments. No wonder those young guns have caught the attention of several former players, including the West Indies legend Brian Lara.

Lara picked Abhishek Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the two exciting Indian batters at the moment. He explained they play attacking cricket and are very stylish.

“First of all, they (Abhishek and Jaiswal) are left-handers. They’re very young, and they play the game in a style [that is] very attacking, very stylish. It’s great to see them go from strength to strength,” stated Lara during an event in Mumbai earlier today.

Jaiswal and Abhishek having a terrific year on a personal level

Talking about their careers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Abhishek Sharma are going through a purple patch in 2024. Jaiswal has been a revelation in the Test format, having scored 929 runs at an average of 66.35, including six fifties and two centuries, in 15 innings.

Further, he has also made a significant impact in the T20I format and scored runs at every possible opportunity. His strike rate of 164.31 depicts how ultra-aggressive he has been in the shortest format.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma has been phenomenal, turning himself into a consistent six-hitter in T20s. He scored 484 runs at an average of 32.26 and a magnificent strike rate of 204.21 in 16 outings, including three fifties.

He carried his IPL form to international cricket, scoring a century in his debut T20I series against Zimbabwe earlier this year. Abhishek has played five matches in the shortest format, scoring 140 runs at an average of 28 and a strike rate of 179.48, with a best of 100.
