The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the retention rules ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) auction.

Franchises are required to submit their lists of retained players by the deadline of October 31. It is reported that they have communicated with the BCCI concerning retention, player salaries, match fees, performance bonuses, and other matters for the upcoming three-year cycle.
As noted by TOI, the IPL franchises remain uncertain about the new regulations regarding Retention and Right to Match (RTM). Under the revised rules, franchises can retain up to six players, including one uncapped player, with a maximum of two uncapped players allowed.

The retention prices have been set at INR 18 crore for Player 1, INR 14 crore for Player 2, INR 11 crore for Player 3, INR 18 crore for Player 4, and INR 14 crore for Player 5. The value for an uncapped player is INR 4 crore.
According to the new rule, if the overall retention amount is under INR 75 crores then only that amount will be deducted but in case the amount surpasses, the additional amount will be removed from the salary cap.
An unknown official of an IPL franchise voiced his concerns regarding the rule and questioned its validity. He also inquired about the financial allocations for retained players if franchises are given more autonomy in their operations.
“What are they trying to say here? It has left us confused too. Does this mean that any price tag can be followed while retaining players? Say Player 1 and Player 2 can be retained at Rs 18 crore each? And if the total price of retentions exceeds Rs 75 crore then that would be deducted from the Salary Cap. If it’s a free hand for the franchises to use their own prices for different retentions then what are the 18, 14 and 11 markers for?,” queried the senior official.
