Discarded India pacer sends a strong message to selectors with a six-wicket haul in Ranji Trophy

He last featured for India during the tour of West Indies the previous year

A discarded India pacer put up a stellar display in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match between Saurashtra and Tamil Nadu.

Left-arm fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat, who has fallen down the pecking order in the national side, sent a strong message to the selectors with a stunning six-wicket haul. Notably, Unadkat had last featured for India during the tour of West Indies the previous year.

Unadkat finished his spell with incredible figures of 6/61 from 24 overs including six maidens. With this recent haul, Unadkat has now accumulated a total of 431 wickets in First-Class cricket, maintaining an average of approximately 22. According to ESPNcricinfo, the left-arm fast bowler secured his 24th five-wicket haul in First-Class matches and has also recorded 21 four-wicket hauls.

Speaking about the match, Tamil Nadu appeared in control of the match when they resumed play at 273/3 earlier today (Day 3). However, Unadkat turned things around, taking four crucial wickets as Tamil Nadu were bowled out for 367. He had already claimed the important wickets of N Jagadeesan (100) and Baba Indrajith (40) on Day 2.

Saurashtra, after scoring 203 runs in their first innings, managed to prevent Tamil Nadu from extending their lead significantly. Unadkat’s four wickets in the morning session reduced Tamil Nadu to 301/8, but they managed to add 66 more runs before being dismissed.

Unadkat had also recently played for Sussex in the County Championship, where he picked up 22 wickets in five matches.

Additionally, Unadkat has signed a new two-year contract with Sussex for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. The 32-year-old played a key role in helping Sussex secure the Division Two title.
