South Africa Legend Leaves Sunrisers Hyderabad Ahead of IPL 2025

Steyn was not available for IPL 2024 due to personal issues

Former South African fast bowling legend Dale Steyn on Tuesday announced that he is leaving his services as the bowling coach for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. The former did that just ahead of the mega IPL 2025 auction and ended his two-year coaching stint with the franchise.

The period that Steyn was been associated with SRH, as a player and now as a coach was fruitful. Young talent like Umran Malik were nurtured, and he also helped many other fast bowlers. Earlier this year Steyn was not available for IPL 2024 due to personal issues. James Franklin took over as bowling coach in his absence.

Under Steyn’s coaching, Sunrisers Eastern Cape has won SA20 back to back in the years 2023 and 2024

While Steyn has come out with the statement that he will not be returning to IPL, however, confirmed that he will remain associated with another team under the same franchise, Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league. He announced his decision on the social media platform X.

“A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL, unfortunately, I won’t be returning for IPL 2025. However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa. Two-time winners here in SA20, let’s try to make it three in a row,” he wrote.

Under Steyn’s coaching, Sunrisers Eastern Cape has won SA20 back-to-back in the years 2023 and 2024. The IPL career has been also good as a player for the veteran, who has played for different franchises such as Deccan Chargers, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Lions. In all, he has played 95 matches and taken 97 wickets in his IPL career.

Recently, the coaching set-up at SRH has seen significant changes. Steyn was employed for the first time when Tom Moody was made head coach in the last part of 2021. Later, Brian Lara was appointed in 2023 and for the season 2024, the head coach position was handed over to Daniel Vettori. When Franklin was made the bowling coach and Vettori’s head coach, SRH reached their first IPL finals after 6 years in 2024 where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.
