Concerns around Rishabh Pant as ball hits kneecap; Rohit Sharma gives update

Following the end of the day, Rohit Sharma provided a major update on Pant’s injury.

During the second day of the first Test between India and New Zealand, Rishabh Pant sustained a blow on his knee and had to walk off the field. The event transpired on the final delivery of the 37th over when Devon Conway tried to play a big shot but missed it, and Pant failed to connect the ball, hitting Pant’s knee.

He was in severe pain immediately, and the physio had to be called upon, who tried doing some primary treatment. It was the same area where Pant had undergone injury after his horrendous accident.

His pain was harsh enough to take him off the field, requiring more attention. The initial impressions didn’t look promising, for he was limping and somehow made it to the pavilion.

Dhruv Jurel, who isn’t part of the XI, padded up to replace him for the remainder of the day. Meanwhile, Pant was seen sitting right behind the boundary cushions where the team physio gave him the required medical attention.

Rohit Sharma provides an update on Rishabh Pant’s injury

Rohit Sharma attended the press conference following the close of play where he talked about a range of things from everything that happened in the middle. He also gave an update on Pant’s injury, confirming the area where the ball hit had swelled but labelled Pant leaving the field “precautionary”.

“Unfortunately, the ball hit straight on his kneecap, the same leg where he’s done surgery on. So, he has got a little bit of swelling on it. The muscles are quite tender at this point in time, so it’s a precautionary measure. We don’t want to take a risk. Rishabh doesn’t want to take a risk because he’s gone through a massive surgery on that particular leg. So, that was the reason for him to go inside. Hopefully, he can recover, and we’ll see him back on the field tomorrow”

India had a really bad day as a unit, for nothing went in their favour, barring the toss where Rohit made a wrong decision to bat first. The Kiwi pacers exploited the overcast conditions and bundled India on a mere 46, their lowest-ever total at home.

Now Pant’s injury has exacerbated things for them, for he not only keeps the wickets but is also among the finest options to tackle pacers in arduous conditions. If he doesn’t progress well with his injury, India might find themselves in a deeper hole after a forgetful start to the series.
