During the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Smith who is in out-of-form, dismissed for a duck in the second innings.
The former Australia captain, batting at number three, did not offer a shot to an in-swinging delivery from Scott Boland and was given out leg before wicket. He managed only three runs in the first innings and was dismissed for a duck in the second.

Smith’s expression indicated that he misread the ball and was surprised by how much the ball swung in.
Smith is currently going through a rough patch in form. In his last six first-class innings, he has been dismissed for a duck twice and managed to reach double figures only twice, with no fifties to his name.
Steve Smith has opened the batting in a couple of games since David Warner’s retirement but had mentioned earlier that his favorite batting position is number four. So, Smith will bat at number four for Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
“I got asked where I’d prefer to bat, and I said four … I also said I’m happy batting wherever, I’m not really too fussed,” the star batter told reporters on Monday at stumps on day two of NSW’s Sheffield Shield match against Victoria.
“I was asked (by Cummins, McDonald) where my preference would be, and I said four. I saw a few things last week saying that I’ve requested to bat at four. That wasn’t the case. I said I’m happy to bat wherever you’d like me to bat, but yeah, four would be my ideal position. It was good fun having a crack at something new, batting up top. I still feel like I could do a job there for sure. It was a pretty small sample size,” Smith added.
Throughout his Test career, he has predominantly batted at No. 4, scoring 5,966 runs at an average of 61.50, including 19 centuries and 26 fifties.
