‘Haven’t had any word’: Star India pacer kept in the dark about his retention before IPL 2025 auction

Every franchise is required to announce their player retention list by October 31.

The retention deadline for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) auction is drawing closer as the anticipation surrounding it grows further. Every franchise is required to announce their player retention list by October 31.

However, a star Indian pacer recently revealed that he is unsure of his retention chances as the franchise has not communicated anything clearly.

Gujarat Titans’ (GT) Mohammed Shami, who is one of the top bowlers in the nation, candidly opened up about not hearing anything from the team management regarding retention.

Echoing on the same lines, Mohammed Shami told SportsTak,

“I don’t know anything about this. The decision lies firmly with the franchise. If they feel the need to retain me, then they will. Otherwise, they won’t”.

“I haven’t had any word with them so far, but if they do give the option, then who would refuse them?” he added.

It is likely that GT are unsure of Shami’s return from injury and is hence yet to decide on the pacer’s future.

When will Mohammed Shami return from injury?

Shami was forced to the sidelines owing to an ankle injury and the subsequent surgery after last year’s ODI World Cup. The 34-year-old then missed the IPL 2024 season and the T20 World Cup 2024, earlier this year.

Speaking of Shami’s comeback, he was initially expected to make a return during the ongoing India vs New Zealand series but could not due to his rehabilitation.

The right-arm pacer is now eyeing the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year for his return.
