It is understood that Pant is not the first pick for DC's captaincy.
Ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) auction, a big franchise has set their sights on dynamic wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant in a captaincy role as rumours of his release from Delhi Capitals (DC) grow stronger.
While reports have suggested that the DC franchise is eager to retain Pant, it is also understood that he might not be the first pick for captaincy.
Notably, there have been multiple discussions between Pant and the DC owners and the latest developments indicate that the India star wants captaincy but the current management is not very eager on that which could lead Pant to enter the IPL 2025 auction and cause a bidding war.

Unless there’s a last-minute change of plans, Pant is expected to participate in the auction, where he is anticipated to attract significant interest with a top franchise on the lookout for a captain.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are closely monitoring the situation, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they make an aggressive bid for him during the mega-auction. With KL Rahul also expected to enter the auction pool, RCB’s options have expanded but Pant is still considered a prime target for the team.
Following Dinesh Karthik’s retirement, RCB is searching for a wicketkeeper in the middle order, and Pant seems to be an ideal fit, making him a strong candidate for the captaincy as well.
In addition to RCB, Lucknow Supergiants (LSG), who have reportedly decided to part ways with KL Rahul, and Punjab Kings (PBKS) are also likely to compete for the left-hander. Ricky Ponting, who is the new head coach of the Punjab side, has a strong rapport with Pant from their time together at the Capitals.
