’12 saal mein ek baar chalta hain’ – Rohit Sharma’s shocking comment after home series loss leaves fans in dismay

Since Rohit Sharma made this weird statement, fans have expressed their disappointment on social media, for they felt Indian captain is taking this series defeat lightly.

The second Test between India and New Zealand in Pune was historic, albeit for unwanted reasons. It was their first home Test series defeat in 12 years, for their last loss in a home rubber came in 2012 when England emerged victorious under MS Dhoni’s tenure.

Since then, India registered 18 consecutive series wins, defeating every opponent coming their way and remaining unbeaten at home for 4331 days. However, the streak has finally ended as New Zealand outplayed India in the first two games in Bengaluru and Pune to clinch the series with a match to go.

When asked about batting stability in the press conference, Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, said they are allowed to fail once in 12 years. He defended his batters saying his batters have been so good for a long period.

“Ye 2 games hua hai jahan humare collapses hue hain. Humne itna matches jeeta hai India mein to uske baare mein aap soch rhe ho ki nii? Batters ne kharab pitches par batting kar ke runs banaye hain, jeeta hai. Ye pahli baar ho raha hai jahan vo collapses ho rahe hain, hum theek se batting nahi kar paa rhe. To 12 saal mein ek baar to allowed hai yaar. Itna collapse agar 12 saal se ho raha tha to hum shayad jeet hi nahi paate (These are two games where we collapsed as a batting unit. We have won so many matches in India, so have you thought about that? Batters have made runs on poor pitches and won the games. We are allowed to fail once in 12 years. We wouldn’t have won so much if we were collapsing regularly in these 12 years).”

Fans outrage on social media over Rohit Sharma’s comments

Since Rohit Sharma made this weird statement, fans have expressed their disappointment on social media, for they felt Indian captain is taking this series defeat lightly. While one section asked Rohit about his contributions during those glory days, others churned out stats and recalled what made India successful under Virat Kohli’s tenure.

Rohit’s remarks have been taken negatively, though his statement is wrongly perceived. Maybe he meant that bad games are bound to occur now and then, but Rohit could have chosen the right words to make the same point.

The social media platform X (formerly Twitter) is flooded with discussions around his statement, with most questioning Rohit’s credentials as a captain. The discourse has moved from series defeat to Rohit’s choice of words in no time.

This is the most India have faced the heat in a home Test series in the last decade or so. There’s still one match to go, and the team will look to bounce back strongly and salvage pride.
