Shreyas captained the team in IPL 2024, guided them to their third IPL title and their first in ten years.
Shreyas Iyer is set to leave Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, as he is not expected to be retained by the franchise. He captained the team in IPL 2024, guided them to their third IPL title and their first in ten years.
The Kolkata Knight Riders are set to exclude Iyer from their retention list, for which the deadline is October 31. However, they still have the option to re-sign him through the Right to Match (RTM) clause.
According to Cricbuzz, Iyer was negotiating for a very high salary, which KKR did not agree to. As a result, he will not be included on their retention list.
The Knight Riders bought Iyer for INR 12.25 crore ahead of the IPL 2022 auction. In that season, he scored 401 runs across 14 innings at an average of 30.85. He missed the 2023 season due to a recurring back injury that required surgery. In the 2024 season, he scored 351 runs, at an average of 39, with the help of five unbeaten innings. Overall, in the IPL, he has played 115 games and accumulated 3127 runs at an average of 32.24 and a strike rate of 127.48.
If Iyer ends up in the auction, he is expected to be in high demand, considering that most franchises prefer having an Indian captain. The batter has already been approached by multiple franchises.
KKR are most likely to retain Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Phil Salt, Rinku Singh, Harshit Rana, and Ramandeep Singh. Out of Harshit and Ramandeep, they can also choose to retain one for 4 lakh, as both are uncapped players.
Notably, players like Mitchell Starc, Venkatesh Iyer, and Varun Chakravarthy are unlikely to be retained.
