Why was Mayank Yadav retained by LSG despite injuries? LSG Co-Owner answers

He could play only 4 matches last season owing to injuries.

Sanjiv Goenka-owned Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) decided to stick with five players ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) retention deadline.

While the franchise took the bold step of letting go of their skipper KL Rahul, LSG also showed faith and backing in retaining their young Indian core.

Amongst the young sensations, dynamic speedster Mayank Yadav made the cut. Yadav made headlines during the last season (IPL 2024) for his ability to consistently clock deliveries over 150kmps. However, he could play only 4 matches owing to injuries.

Speaking about the decision to retain speedster Mayank Yadav despite persistent injury concerns, LSG co-owner Shashwat Goenka told TOI,

“The way you look at it, when a player is playing a match, is he able to contribute to a win? I think Mayank fits that bill perfectly. He played in four games last season and picked up seven wickets. That itself shows the potential of the individual”.

LSG head into IPL 2025 auction win INR 69 crore

Barring Nicholas Pooran, who was the top retention for LSG, the team management retained Mayank Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi amongst capped players and Mohsin and Ayush Badoni as uncapped players.

While Pooran will earn INR 21 crore, Bishnoi and Mayank were retained for INR 11 crore respectively, and Badoni and Mohsin will pocket INR 4 crore each.

In total, LSG has spent a total of INR 51 crores to retain their five stars, which will now give them a remaining value of INR 69 crores in their purse for the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction. Additionally, they will also have one Right to Match (RTM) card, which grants them the option to re-sign a player of their choice.
