Former fringe Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) player picks three wickets in final over in thriller, boosts IPL 2025 auction chances

A low-scoring thriller in Dambulla saw New Zealand edge Sri Lanka by five runs in the second T20I.

In what turned out to be a dramatic run-chase, New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson picked up a hat-trick to restrict Sri Lanka early on. But with a target as low as 109, the hosts were still favourites to sneak in a win.

Reduced to 63/5, Sri Lanka were struggling but Pathum Nissanka kept them in the hunt with a half-century. With just eight runs needed off six balls, Sri Lanka were in the driving seat to go 2-0 up in the series, especially with Nissanka still unbeaten at the crease.

A dramatic final over from Glenn Phillips

Glenn Phillips bowled the crucial final over to the Sri Lankan batters. Maheesh Theekshana was on strike and he promptly put Nissanka back on to face the rest of the over off the first ball.

But, the twist began here as Nissanka holed out to long-on attempting a wild slog sweep. Now, Sri Lanka’s tail had to do the rescue act with still seven needed off four balls.

Next ball, Matheesha Pathirana was out stumped and New Zealand were suddenly on top in a game where they were behind the eight ball at all times.

Nuwan Thushara gave the strike back to Theekshana, but off the penultimate ball, Phillips snared another wicket, as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 103, falling three runs short.

Who will pick Glenn Phillips at the IPL 2025 auction?

Released by Sunrisers Hyderabad after he barely made the cut in the XI with the squad full of elite overseas players, Phillips will be eyeing more game time in the IPL. And that could come by joining hands with the right franchise at the IPL 2025 auction.

A dynamic middle-order batter and finisher, Phillips is also a live wire in the field, can keep wickets and has also been outstanding with the ball across formats in recent times, making him a one-of-a-kind multi-skilled player.

Glenn Phillips enters the IPL 2025 auction as a versatile and impactful player, offering more than just powerful batting.

His strike rate of 145.1 across formats and a remarkable 197.5 during the death overs showcase his ability to accelerate and finish games, making him a valuable middle-order asset.

After limited game time at SRH, Phillips will likely look for a franchise that can offer him consistent opportunities. Teams needing a dynamic middle-order player who can adapt to different roles will see his value, especially as a match-winner with both bat and ball.

With his skill set, Phillips is set to attract strong interest at the auction, as franchises recognize his potential to make a significant impact across the season.

The likes of Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings are expected to be interested in the New Zealand all-rounder.
