Analysing the IPL 2025 auction strategy of Rajasthan Royals (RR) based on players they have retained.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) have retained six players ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. They have spent INR 79 crores and have INR 41 crores to work with during the auction. Before delving into RR’s strategy for the auction, let’s analyse each player they have retained and their expertise.

  1. Sanju Samson: The captain of the side, Sanju Samson is among the most skilled batters in the country. He is equally adept against pace and spin and can be flexible with his batting position. He is also a wicketkeeper.
  2. Yashasvi Jaiswal: Yashasvi Jaiswal is another complete batter who opens the innings. He is a southpaw who is equally good against pace and spin and is technically superior. He brings the LHB dimension to the batting unit.
  3. Riyan Parag: Riyan Parag’s retention comes after a strong IPL 2024, for he finally stepped up and showed his true potential. He is a middle-order batter who is powerful vs pace and has different batting gears and boundary-hitting shots. His game vs spin is also decent and can bowl useful off-spin.
  4. Dhruv Jurel: Among the finest young talents in the country, Dhruv Jurel is really good against pace and spin and can be flexible with his batting position. He also provides the wicketkeeping option.
  5. Shimron Hetmyer: Shimron Hetmyer is a middle or lower-middle-order batter who is powerful vs pace. Further, his game against spinners is also decent, even though he has shown signs of regression against them lately. He brings the LHB dimension to the batting unit.
  6. Sandeep Sharma: Sandeep Sharma is a pacer specialising in the powerplay and death-over phase. There is also decent value in the middle overs, even though he doesn’t have a high pace. He was among the best speedsters in the death overs in the last two years

Now that it’s clear where the voids are, we can explore how Rajasthan Royals might go about their business in the IPL 2025 Auction.

What do Rajasthan Royals require in the IPL 2025 auction?

Role No.1 – A spin-hitter who is decent vs pace and can be flexible with his batting position, an LHB is a bonus

  1. Jacob Bethell: Jacob Bethell has emerged as one of the better players of spin in the English circuit. He has a range of shots and is more than capable vs pace as well. He can be flexible with his batting position and brings the LHB dimension.
  2. Harry Brook: Harry Brook is among the best players of spin, even though he is not an LHB. He is naturally suited for the middle-order role and can bat anywhere in the lineup. He will be a long-term investment.
  3. Nitish Rana: Nitish Rana might be a perfect addition to RR’s batting lineup. He counters all types of spin well and has done well in the league. He also brings the LHB dimension and can bowl useful off-spin.
  4. Nehal Wadhera: Nehal Wadhera is equally capable against pace and spin and can bat anywhere. He will only improve from here on and will be a long-term investment. He also saves an overseas spot, even though his price might get out of RR’s budget.
  5. Rilee Rossouw: Assuming RR don’t have a high budget, Rilee Rossouw will be a budget pick. He can bat at No.3 or 4 and brings the LHB dimension. He handles pace and spin well.

Role No.2 – A finger-spinner with some batting value as a bonus

  1. Ravichandran Ashwin: Rajasthan Royals can simply opt for Ravichandran Ashwin again. He has vast experience and brings some batting value as well. He will enjoy playing in Jaipur.
  2. Krunal Pandya: Krunal Pandya is another decent fit. He provides value with both bat and ball and can bowl defensively. His batting value is more than Ashwin’s.
  3. Sai Kishore: Sai Kishore is among the finest defensive spinners in the country and can bowl in tight areas. He can also bowl a bit. His price won’t be as high, and RR will have a quality operator for the middle overs.
  4. Manimaran Siddharth: Manimaran Siddharth might not be a popular pick but is a quality spinner. He bowls stump-to-stump line and can provide useful support to wicket-takers. He will also come in RR’s budget.
  5. Allah Ghazanfar: Allah Ghazanfar is among those rising stars who will soon become permanent in the IPL. He has plenty of variations and is equally adept vs LHBs and RHBs. He can also hit the ball long with the bat.

Role No.3 – A wrist-spinner who is a genuine wicket-taker

  1. Yuzvendra Chahal: Yuzvendra Chahal is the biggest wicket-taker in the competition and was with RR in the previous cycle. He might be expensive in this mega auction, but RR should be ready to spend a big amount on him. He will fit perfectly in their setup, as was the case last time.
  2. Noor Ahmad: Noor Ahmad is another consistent wicket-taker in the middle overs. He will get ample help off the deck in Jaipur. His previous experience playing in the league will also be handy.
  3. Suyash Sharma: Suyash Sharma has all the qualities to be a permanent in the league. He is a modern-day spinner who can bowl at a high pace and deceive batters with his accuracy. He will be a budget pick.
  4. Adil Rashid: Adil Rashid hasn’t found ample success in the league but is seriously skilled. He has enough control over his variations and has done well almost everywhere. There is also some batting value.
  5. Adam Zampa: Adam Zampa didn’t make himself available for RR last season, so they might be slightly puzzled over re-acquiring him. However, he is skilled and is a serious wicket-taker in the middle overs. If available, he will be a useful addition to any spin attack.

Role No.4 – A powerplay specialist

  1. Trent Boult: Trent Boult is among the best powerplay pacers available in the player pool and was with RR in the previous cycle. He was among their best performers, so RR can simply re-bid for him. However, his price can get out of RR’s budget unless they keep some amount reserved for him specifically.
  2. Josh Hazlewood: Josh Hazlewood provides dual values: he can bowl with the new ball and operate effectively in the middle overs. He is very accurate with his lines and lengths and can bowl hard lengths post powerplay. He has done well in the league previously.
  3. Khaleel Ahmed: Khaleel Ahmed is a left-arm pacer who can move the new ball and bring variety to the bowling attack. He can bowl as many as three overs in the powerplay. If RR don’t get Boult, they should definitely try him.
  4. Anshul Kamboj: Anshul Kamboj’s credentials have surged significantly in the last few months. He hits the seam and generates enough movement, which is crucial for a new-ball bowler. Even if RR get someone else for the role, they should keep him as a reserve, for Anshul is genuinely skilled and soon be a permanent.
  5. Vaibhav Arora: Vaibhav Arora will be a budget pick. He can swing the new ball both ways and extract anything available in the air. There is also a decent death-over bowling value.
  6. Spencer Johnson: Spencer Johnson has performed timely against Pakistan to surge his value. He is a lethal new-ball bowler who can generate ample movement due to his superior skillsets. Further, he has the pace to be a decent middle and death-over bowler, and if RR don’t get Boult, they should go for him.

Role No.5 – A middle-overs enforcer with some death-over bowling value

  1. Avesh Khan: It’s like RR had a perfect side last season. They acquired Avesh Khan via a trade deal with Lucknow Super Giants, and he did his part decently. He is among the finest hit-the-deck pacer who has decent control over his yorkers, so he will be in heavy demand.
  2. Kuldeep Sen: Rajasthan Royals had Kuldeep Sen in the last cycle and should look to get him back. He can hit the deck hard and bowl into the body to cramp the batters. There’s also decent death-over value.
  3. Gerald Coetzee: Gerald Coetzee has all the skillsets to bowl effectively in the middle overs. He can bowl at pace, his natural lengths are shorter and can hurry the batters. He has shown a few slower balls as well for death overs.
  4. Umran Malik: Due to his recent struggles, Umran Malik will be a budget pick this time. He has some serious pace and is an ideal enforcer in flow. However, he can be vulnerable since he errs too much with his lines and lengths.
  5. Gus Atkinson: Another budget pick, Gus Atkinson might be a useful pick, given his attributes. He has the pace and can bowl shorter-length deliveries into the body to hurry even decent backfoot players. Further, he will improve from here on and can be a long-term investment.
  6. Yudhvir Singh Charak: Another useful pick, Yudhvir Singh Charak will surely become a permanent in IPL soon. He can hurry the batters and generate extra bounce, which is a highlight. Further, there’s massive death-over potential as well, given he will improve his accuracy and consistency over his yorkers.
