Shreyas Iyer Dazzles with a Stunning Century a Day Before IPL 2025 Auction; Serves Timely Reminder to Franchises

Shreyas Iyer served a timely reminder about his worth to IPL franchises ahead of the IPL 2025 Auction in Jeddah.

Shreyas Iyer hammered an unbeaten 130 off just 57 balls, propelling Mumbai to a formidable 250/4 against Goa in their first match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 season on Saturday. His innings, studded with 11 fours and 10 sixes, not only showed his dominance but also served as a timely reminder of his capabilities, coming just a day before the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah.

Iyer’s aggressive approach was evident from the outset. He seamlessly combined classical strokes with innovative shots, dismantling the Goa bowling attack. His ability to find gaps and clear boundaries with ease highlighted his exceptional form and fitness. This performance is particularly significant given his recent release from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), a decision that surprised many in the cricketing fraternity.

KKR’s decision to release Iyer, who led them to their third IPL title in 2024, was unexpected. Venky Mysore, KKR’s CEO, explained that the decision to part ways was mutual, stressing upon the importance of a player’s commitment to the team. Despite investing in Iyer and grooming him for captaincy, the team respected his desire to explore his market value.

Iyer’s recent century is a clear statement to IPL franchises ahead of the auction. His leadership qualities, combined with his batting prowess, make him a valuable asset. Teams like Delhi Capitals, who have released their captain Rishabh Pant, are reportedly keen on re-signing Iyer, considering his previous successful stint with them. He is in the first marquee set in the auction, registered at a base price of INR 2 crores.

Former India batter Sunil Gavaskar also weighed in on Iyer’s potential suitors recently. He predicted that teams like Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru might bid for Iyer, given their need for a seasoned middle-order batsman and a potential leader.

Iyer’s performance against Goa not only shows his readiness for the upcoming IPL season but also highlights his determination to prove his worth. His ability to anchor the innings while maintaining an aggressive strike rate is a proof of his maturity as a batsman. As the auction approaches, franchises will undoubtedly have their eyes on Iyer, recognizing the value he brings both as a player and a leader.
