Jindal namedropped the two players who were going to share the leadership duties.
Delhi Capitals (DC) took a big decision by letting go of their previous skipper Rishabh Pant ahead of the retention deadline. It was then expected that the DC management would look to bring back another of their former leader, Shreyas Iyer, in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) auction.
While DC stayed in the hunt for Iyer the longest, they were eventually outbid by Punjab Kings, who made Shreyas Iyer the second most expensive buy in IPL history at INR 26.75 crores. DC eventually settled for KL Rahul for a steal deal of INR 14 crores and it is largely believed that Delhi had found themselves a captain.
However, echoing on the same lines, the Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal made a big revelation about next season’s captaincy. Jindal hinted at a dual captaincy system – to be shared between KL Rahul and Axar Patel.
Parth Jindal explained, “We have a very young batting lineup. Both KL and Axar are going to lead them and are going to guide them. KL’s batting and experience will be a vital cog in the wheel.”
Speaking about Delhi’s activity on Day 1 of the IPL 2025 auction, they roped in nine players with a splurge of INR 59.20 crores. KL Rahul and Aussie pacer Mitchell Starc (INR 11.75 crores) were the top buys for the franchise.
Apart from the star duo, Delhi Capitals signed – Harry Brook (INR 6.25 crores), Jake Fraser-McGurk (INR 9 crores), T. Natarajan (INR 10.75 crores), Karun Nair (INR 50 lakhs), Sameer Rizvi (INR 95 lakhs), Ashutosh Sharma (INR 3.80 crores), Mohit Sharma (INR 2.20 crores).
Previously they have retained four players – Axar Patel (INR 16.5 crores), Kuldeep Yadav (INR 13.25 crores), Tristan Stubbs (INR 10 crores), Abishek Porel (INR 4 crores).
