MI tried to include several good cricketers in their squad but had to back out at the last moment due to the tight budget.
Mumbai Indians (MI) were clear with what they wanted during the IPL 2025 auction and were spot-on with their picks. They covered almost every base and formed a quality lineup to compete hard in the upcoming edition.
However, despite bidding hard, they also missed out on a few quality players. They tried to include several good cricketers in their squad but had to back out at the last moment due to the tight budget.
We look at three players MI bid for unsuccessfully at the IPL 2025 auction.
For Quinton de Kock, the bidding war started between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) before Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) arrived in the arena. The tussle between MI and KKR lasted a few bids before MI backed out.
Eventually, KKR grabbed him for INR 3.60 crores, and MI’s bid was penultimate. Maybe they could have pushed harder to get Quinton but had other slots to fill and had to let him go.

Jofra Archer has previously worked with the Mumbai Indians, and now that he is fit and firing again, MI want to regain his services. They went for him straight away, and while the bidding war started between them and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Rajasthan Royals (RR) joined midway.
MI bid for Archer to INR 12.25 crores, but RR were more desperate to get him. When RR made the final bid of INR 12.50 crores, the five-time champions had to let him go, and they lost a quality speedster due to the exorbitant price.
Mumbai Indians went for several Indian and overseas pacers but couldn’t get most of them for various reasons. They also tried getting Josh Hazlewood, Australia’s premium pacer with ample value in the powerplay and middle overs.
They joined the bandwagon midway through the bidding war and went till INR 12.25 crores, but RCB gave him INR 12.50 crores and got him. MI fumbled another quality pacer due to their low budget and would be massively disappointed to see him go away.
