5 Best Overseas Openers Picked by Teams in the IPL 2025 Auction

The IPL 2025 auction saw a number of openers being sold in various sets, with almost every team getting a few solid options.

The openers play a crucial role in any team, for they utilise the powerplay overs and provide a stable base for batters to follow. Hence, every team looks to have solid openers who can do this arduous job consistently.

The IPL 2025 auction saw a number of openers being sold in various sets, with almost every team getting a few solid options. Most of them are match-winners who can win the games alone and pose a significant threat to the opponent.

We look at the five best overseas openers picked by teams during the IPL 2025 auction.

Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler was among the most popular overseas openers in the IPL 2025 auction due to the skillsets he offers. He was eventually grabbed by Gujarat Titans (GT) for a whopping INR 15.25 crores during the auction.

As many as four teams were involved in the bidding war, but GT overtook all of them and paid the highest amount to get his services. Buttler is a solid player of pace and spin and can bat at different gears, making him an ideal T20 opener.

Phil Salt

After his last season heroics, Phil Salt was bound to get a hefty sum in the IPL 2025 auction, and it happened. After an intense bidding war between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), RCB eventually got him for a big INR 11.50 crores.

Salt is a powerful batter vs pace who can maximise the field restrictions and provide a brisk start to his team. He is a proven performer and will succeed on flat decks in Bengaluru.

Devon Conway

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) released Devon Conway before the auction but were clear to get him back during the auction. They got him for a reasonable sum of INR 6.25 and will use him and Ruturaj Gaikwad as openers.

Conway is among the finest players of spin among overseas batters and can switch gears swiftly. He can also keep the wickets and can be a successor to MS Dhoni.

Quinton de Kock

Quinton de Kock is another quality pick, and KKR would be pleased to get him at a reasonable price. He was sold at INR 3.60 crores after KKR gave more amount than Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians (MI).

He is powerful vs pace and is strong on the leg-side region, known to utilise the powerplay overs. Further, he can also keep the wickets and is excellent with the gloves.

Jake Fraser-McGurk

An intent machine, Jake Fraser-McGurk is easily among the most exciting openers who look to hit every delivery out of the park. He has a long reach and generates ample power in his shots without moving his feet too much.

Jake is an ideal powerplay basher and was fabulous on flat decks of Delhi. Usually, all the pitches in IPL are ideal for shot-making, and Jakeโ€™s hitting range will improve significantly, making him a long-term investment who will be a match-winner.
