His economy was the second-best in Test cricket history among bowlers to bowl at least 15 overs in an innings.
A West Indies youngster bowled a terrific economical spell against Bangladesh during the second Test in Jamaica last night. He was tight with his lines and lengths and gave absolutely nothing to Bangladeshi batters to score on.
Jayden Seales took four wickets for five runs in 15.5 overs on Day 2 to go into the record books for bowling among the most economical spells ever in Test cricket history. Among bowlers to take at least four wickets in an innings, Seales’ economy rate (0.31) was the best in the red-ball format.
Further, his economy was the second-best in Test cricket history among bowlers to bowl at least 15 overs in an innings. Only Bapu Nadkarni (0.15) was more frugal during his 32-over marathon spell against England in 1964, where he also bowled 27 maidens.

Seales tops this chart again among pacers, surpassing Umesh Yadav’s sensational spell against South Africa in Delhi in 2015, where he had an economy rate of 0.42. There were only five legitimate run-scoring deliveries in Seales’ spell of 95 balls, where he bowled as many as ten maiden overs, forcing Bangladesh to try something extra and lose their wickets in the process.
After winning the toss, Bangladesh opted to bat first, but the move wasn’t rewarding, for they were bundled on a mere 164 in 71.5 overs. Jayden Seales snared four wickets, while Shamar Joseph dismissed three batters to restrict Bangladesh to a below-par total.
Shadman Islam top-scored 64 runs, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz (36) and Shahadat Hossain Dipu (22) made decent contributions for Bangladesh. Overall, they would be pretty disappointed with their efforts after winning the toss, for they couldn’t buy runs fluently.
While batting, Bangladesh bowled in tight areas and got an early wicket of Mikyle Louis in the 13th over. Nahid Rana provided the opening wicket for the Tigers.
However, that was their only success with the ball in the day. Kraigg Brathwaite (33) and Keacy Carty (19) are going strong, stitching a crucial 45-run stand and will look to continue later today.
