Former South African batter Herschelle Gibbs has taken a cheeky dig at another former RCB batter for not winning an IPL trophy. The player is considered one of the greatest to play the game, but an IPL title always eluded him.
A user on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) said that he was told the Champions Trophy tournament is irrelevant. Gibbs gave a fitting reply, saying it was more than a T20 league for them.
When the same user brought up AB de Villiers’ inferior record in the same tournament, Gibbs replied that he won an IPL tournament. “And I’ve won an IPL as well,” wrote Gibbs, taking a dig at AB.
Later, someone brought up Gibbs’ fumbled catch in the World Cup 1999, which played a crucial role in South Africa’s narrow defeat, and Gibbs replied, “same happened in 2015 semi final vs nz”. There were several fielding errors during the 2015 semifinal fixture as South Africa crumbled under pressure in Auckland to let the game slip by and lost the game with one ball to spare, shattering South Africa’s dream of winning an ICC tournament.
Talking about AB de Villiers, he has played for two franchises – Delhi Capitals (then Daredevils) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) – in the Indian Premier League. He has been among the finest batters in the league and has scored several runs with the willow.
AB has also broken several records and is known for his supreme batting, even after a few years of retirement. However, AB de Villiers has never won an IPL title despite coming close to winning it a few times.
RCB reached the final in IPL 2011 and IPL 2016 and came close to winning the cup in the latter season but failed to get over the line. Over the years, several memes have been made about his inability to win the title despite playing in a quality team.
So, Gibbs didn’t miss out on an opportunity, either. However, that doesn’t change that AB is one of the greatest IPL batters, even if he didn’t win the title.
