Unsold in IPL 2025 Auction, Former KKR, CSK all-rounder takes four wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

He bowled brilliantly for Mumbai during their latest fixture against Services to help his team register a comprehensive victory.

An unsold all-rounder, previously with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), stepped up with the ball in the Syed Mushtaq Ali. He bowled brilliantly for Mumbai during their latest fixture against Services to help his team register a comprehensive victory.

Shardul Thakur snared four wickets for 25 runs in his four-over spell to emerge as the best bowler of the game. All four wickets came with the new ball inside his first three overs as he derailed Services’ innings right from the start.

He removed all top-four batters, Kunwar Pathak, Nitin Tanwar, Vineet Dhankhar, and Gaurav Kochar, to provide an ideal start for his team. His sensational spell meant Services never recovered in the innings, for they lost too many wickets early on in the powerplay.

There were individual flashes of brilliance from other Services batters, but that wasn’t enough for the team to win the game. Shardul’s spell was fabulous, but his bowling spell didn’t fetch him the Player of the Match award because Shivam Dube’s knock was more impactful, and he won that award.

Why did Shardul Thakur go unsold in the IPL 2025 auction?

Several reasons resulted in Shardul Thakur getting unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, but the biggest reason behind it was the introduction of the Impact Player rule. If we look at his skillsets, Thakur doesn’t really specialise in a specific department, even though he contributes to all aspects.

Such players are outdated in the Indian Premier League since teams can simultaneously play a batter and bowler. So, a player needs to be adept and masterful in at least one department to be part of the league, and Thakur doesn’t fit that criteria.

Further, the league is ever-evolving, and Thakur hasn’t managed to grow as a player. So, that also played a key role in him being unsold during the auction since several better players are available in the league now.

He kept his base price at INR 2 crores, another reason behind getting unsold. Thakur could have earned a bid at the auction if his base price was slightly lower.
