MS Dhoni rolled back the clock with a brilliant catch behind the sticks but to his surprise, it was deemed no-ball. The Chennai Super Kings skipper has now been away from international cricket for over two years and has found it difficult to get past the rustiness. However, the 40-year-old was quick to grasp a brilliant catch off Rahul Tripathi and negated some speculations about his ability.

Sam Curran’s short delivery is not the most threatening of balls for a top-order batter, especially with the pace factor (or lack of it). Tripathi attempted the upper-cut and found a thin edge flying to the keeper. MS Dhoni was at full stretch to get a hand on it and despite failing to grasp it on first attempt, he got hold of the rebound and Tripathi did not even wait for the umpire to give it out.

The edge was clear and so was the execution of Curran’s plan, but the replays suggested that the ball was well over Rahul Tripathi’s head. The side angles suggested that the decision must be overturned and neither Dhoni, nor Curran, had any complaints about it. The disappointment was definitely palpable on the players’ face and to rub salt on the wound, Tripathi smashed a massive six over covers off the free-hit.

MS Dhoni to quit after this IPL?

With the mega auction coming up, it seems like we are witnessing the last of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the Indian Premier League, and any form of professional cricket. Although the former Indian captain never really reveals his true intentions or hints it to the press, it might be likely that the Chennai management look for a new captain to begin a new era.

Under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, Chennai Super Kings established themselves as one of the greatest T20 units of all time, winning the IPL three times and the Champions League two times. Only twice in his tenure as a captain in IPL did his side fail to reach the final four stages (RPS 2016 and CSK 2020) and reached the finals 8 times.
