By his standards, Indian ace quick Jasprit Bumrah had a poor outing in the New Year’s Test played in Johannesburg against South Africa. The unorthodox speedster bowled a fine spell in the first session of Day 2 but thereafter, his performance just dipped off through the Test match.

Bumrah, curiously, failed to extract consistent seam movement from a moist but also quite uneven Jo’burg track and finished with figures of 1/49 off 21 overs and 0/70 off 17 overs.

The second-innings spell would’ve been the cause of huge disappointment for the seamer, who was expected to unleash his wrath on the South African batters and win India the Test match defending a score of 240.

Instead, in a rare instance, he erred with his lines and lengths and went for over four runs an over, which meant South African batters led by skipper Dean Elgar could swiftly progress in their run-chase without ever feeling excessively under pressure.

Jasprit Bumrah warns of his strong comeback against South Africa

An interesting incident took place near the closing stages of Proteas’ run-chase in Johannesburg on Thursday (January 6). As a South African win gradually became the only possibility, the angst and the pain started to kick in amongst the Indian cricketers.

But that didn’t lead to any loss of confidence, as Jasprit Bumrah reminded everyone via the stump mic that there is one more Test match to be played in Cape Town. Bumrah’s remarks were caught on the mic when India’s short-leg fielder Hanuma Vihari was being attended for a blow he had copped by the team physio.

Bumrah was disturbed by something unspecific that South African batters may have done as he said “purposely they’re doing this”, before adding (in Hindi translated to English here), “there’s another match left. Let them (SA) fly as much as they want to, another match is left. The ones who are hearing this, please hear it.”

Jasprit Bumrah sent a warning for the Proteas batters and an assurance to his fans that he and the team will come roaring back to try and take the series 2-1 in Newlands. The third and final Test will be played from Tuesday (January 11).
