Australia Star To Miss India Series, In a Race Against Time For T20 World Cup 2026 Post Surgery

Amogh Bodas

He has featured in 124 T20Is for Australia.

If being injured in the most unorthodox ways was a sport, Australia cricketer Glenn Maxwell would possibly make it to the top quite easily. Weeks before the white-ball series against India, the all-rounder has been on the receiving end of another injury. Again, in the most freakiest manner. Maxwell suffered an injury in the training session amid their ongoing series against New Zealand.

Maxwell was bowling to Mitchell Owen in the nets session. However, Owen smashed a ball back at the all-rounder, which ended up fracturing his arm. Matthew Short, who was batting in the adjoining net described the incident and stated that it didn’t look good. As a result, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) star was ruled out of the three-match T20I series against the Kiwis.

Having said that, this isn’t the first time that the 36-year-old has suffered an injury in the most bizarre manner. In 2022, Maxwell fractured a leg when one of his friends fell on it during a 50th birthday party. To add to that, he was left concussed during the 2023 ODI World Cup, when he fell off a golf cart. The Australian all-rounder has had a clear history with mishaps, and he has got another one to add to his arsenal.

Glenn Maxwell In a Race Against Time

Though it is understood that the 36-year-old all-rounder has undergone a surgery, his return to competitive cricket is yet to be determined. A blow on the wrist would be a huge one for any player, irrespective of his skills. Nonetheless, it is quite evident that Maxwell would not be able to take part in the upcoming white-ball series against India, which starts on October 19.

Having said that, it is understood that the PBKS all-rounder will be fully fit to resume ahead of the Big Bash League 2025/26. He would continue representing the Melbourne Stars this season – for whom he has been an integral part. It is therefore safe to say that Maxwell is on the road to recovery and should be in action soon.

That being out of the way, the Australians would be pleased to see Maxwell recovering well before the T20 World Cup in 2026. The right-arm all-rounder will be a trump card for Australia, considering his exploits with both bat and ball. In 124 T20Is for Australia, Maxwell has amassed 2,833 runs at a healthy strike-rate of 156.

Moreover, having played a huge amount of cricket in India due to the Indian Premier League (IPL), his experiences would add to Australia’s chances in the tournament. They will only hope that he doesn’t fall prey to another bizarre injury, something he’s getting known for.

How the PBKS Star Adds a Silver Lining For Australia

The hero for Australia against Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup is one of the highest valued players in the shortest format. His ability to weigh in with the bat when the team needs him the most is unmatched. Moreover, Maxwell can give crucial overs to his captain in the white-ball formats, which makes him a guarantee in the XI.

To add to that, Maxwell is a live wire in the field. Something which separates him from the rest would be a really strong core. The innings which he played against Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India was a classic representation of his core strength. Despite cramping up, he was able to manage his body on one leg, and still pile up sixes.

The power-hitting workload in the Australia side would be shared by the likes of Tim David. But Maxwell’s bowling is what makes him a serious contender against any side. On pitches in India, his bowling would make a lot of difference. But most importantly, it would allow the Aussies the cushion to go in with a lot of balance.
