The first-ever game of T20I cricket was played between hosts New Zealand and Australia in Auckland on February 5, 2005. Facing their neighbours, the visitors came out triumphant by a margin of 44 runs. Two years later, the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup was played in South Africa, a tournament that had a game-transforming effect because of India’s title victory.
Since then, T20 cricket has gained global prominence among fans and experts, with the proliferation of various domestic leagues, including the immensely popular Indian Premier League (IPL).
As many as 74 countries have played the shortest format of the game internationally. The number of nations playing T20I cricket has been on the rise ever since the ICC awarded T20I status to all of its officially established associate members.
The T20 World Cup has now had six editions, with India (2007), Pakistan (2009), England (2010), West Indies (2012), Sri Lanka (2014) and West Indies (2016) winning them.
