Horror Start By India In Women’s World Cup 2025! Harmanpreet Kaur, Harleen Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues Dismissed In Same Over In IND-W vs SL-W

Amogh Bodas

India were going steady at 120/2 in the first 25 overs.

An over can do a lot to a cricket game. Just when India thought that they were in control, Inoka Ranaweera gave them three reasons to show that they weren’t. The left-arm spinner knocked over Harleen Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur in the same over to sent shivers down the spine of the Indian middle-order.

The two neighbours kickstarted their Women’s World Cup 2025 campaign in Guwahati, locking horns in the opening match of the tournament. After Sri Lanka won the toss and put India in to bat first, the Women in Blue had a steady start. The only downside was that they lost Smriti Mandhana early, after she handed a catch to deep cover point.

Harleen Deol and Pratika Rawal stitched a 67-run partnership to steady the ship for the Blues. There was a major halt to the game due to rain and the match was reduced to 48 overs per side. However, the Lankans knew that they needed to get regular breakthroughs to stop the Indians. Ranaweera went a notch further and got them three, instead of one. To add to that, wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh was also dismissed to skipper Chamari Athapaththu in the very next over.

Inoka Ranaweera Jolts India With Three Quick Wickets

Anyone who finds the 50-over format a drag and is in some need for drama just needs to fast-forward to the 26th over of the Indian innings. The Women in Blue were 120/2 at the 25 over mark, which was pretty good a total considering the firepower they had later. Little did they know, things were going to turn against them in the next six deliveries.

Harleen Deol, who was well set at 48 was the first one to be dismissed by Ranaweera. The delivery was full enough to be hit for a single down to long-off, and that’s exactly what Deol planned to do. Except the fact that it rose on her. As a result, the Indian No.3 ended up handing an easy catch to the fielder at covers. Deol’s 48 came off 64 deliveries, and she was just starting to put her foot on the accelerator.

In walked Jemimah Rodrigues, as the Indians thought that the youngster would stitch a partnership with her captain. However, the 25-year-old found herself comprehensively beaten on the very first delivery she faced. Ranaweera bowled a terrific delivery which pitched on the middle stump and went on to hit the top of the off stump. Rodrigues played for the one coming on straight and was beaten by the turn. A dream delivery for a left-arm off-spinner!

The hat-trick was averted by Deepti Sharma and she also took a single off the fourth delivery. Harmanpreet Kaur on strike after two wickets falling would usually be a sigh of relief for the Indians. But that was not to be. The Indian skipper lost her wicket on the next delivery, and the Sri Lankans were ecstatic. Harmanpreet tried to cut a delivery that was slightly short, only to edge it to the wicketkeeper’s gloves.
