The ODIs will begin on October 19.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the squad for the upcoming white-ball tour to Australia. India are scheduled to play three ODIs and five T20Is, starting from October 19. This will be the first ODI series for India since the Champions Trophy 2025 triumph.
The major news is that Shubman Gill has been handed the ODI captaincy, with Rohit Sharma’s tenure coming to an end. Rohit and Virat Kohli will return to action, while Dhruv Jurel got a maiden call-up to the fifty-over side. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja have been rested for the ODIs. However, there are a few notable omissions from the two white ball squads.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has found a place in the fifty-over side, but he continues to be left out of the shorter format. The 23-year-old southpaw has played 23 T20Is for India, but none since July last year.
Jaiswal wasn’t part of India’s title-winning campaign in the recent Asia Cup 2025 either. The left-hand batter has to wait for his turn as the T20I side is currently packed with the top order batters such as Gill, Abhishek Sharma, and Sanju Samson.
Jaiswal has an excellent record in the shorter format, with over 3,500 runs at an average of 33 while striking at 151. He has done well for India and the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson was part of the Asia Cup squad but has been overlooked for the fifty-over format yet again. Samson has not played an ODI since December 2023, when he toured South Africa. He had hit a century in the final game of that series.
Samson has been unfortunate not to be considered for this format. He has a stellar record in limited opportunities, having amassed 510 runs from 16 games at an average of 56.66 and a strike rate of 99.60. However, with India having the likes of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jurel, it seems like the end of the road for Samson.
Riyan Parag was another notable exclusion from both white-ball sides. The young all-rounder is one of the best talents in the country, but remains on the sidelines. He scored 393 runs for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2025 at an average of 33 while striking at 166.
His List A credentials are pretty good as well, with over 1,800 runs at an average of 42 and a strike rate of 104. In the ongoing India A vs Australia A unofficial ODI series, he struck 67 off 42 in the first game and followed it up with a 58 off 54 in the second. Nitish Kumar Reddy’s selection ahead of Parag in both formats could be down to India’s need for a pace bowling all-rounder.
