Shreyas Iyer Slams Blazing Ton Against Australia A, Big Positive For India Ahead Of Australia ODI Series

Amogh Bodas

The 30-year-old has piled up 2,845 runs so far in ODIs.

India A captain, Shreyas Iyer, has scored a blistering century in the first unofficial ODI against Australia A at Kanpur. The 50-over affair, which was supposed to take place on September 30, is being played today (October 1) after being abandoned by rain.

Shreyas has put on a formidable show to take his side past the 400-run mark. He was earlier dropped on by the wicketkeeper, Lachlan Shaw, off Tanveer Sangha’s bowling. He latched on to the opportunity and made it big. As a result, India A piled up a massive 413/6 in their 50 overs.

The 30-year-old recently announced that he would be taking a break from red-ball cricket to manage a back injury. However, he surely seems to be making his chances count in the white-ball format. The right-handed batter has been one of India’s mainstays in the middle-order in ODIs, and he hasn’t failed to impress. Openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya had set the perfect platform for Shreyas Iyer to fire. And the India A skipper made sure he did!

Shreyas got to his fifty off as many deliveries. The openers, Prabhsimran and Priyansh stitched a partnership of 135 runs off just 20-odd overs to provide a great start. For the skipper, it was just a matter of taking it from there. After his fifty, it took Shreyas just 25 deliveries to get to his hundred. He accelerated at the right time and made sure that the Aussies had no chance of stopping him.

What Makes Shreyas Iyer a Good Fit In ODI Cricket

The Punjab Kings captain has faced continuous snubs from multiple formats in international cricket. The latest episode came after he was not picked in the squad for the recently concluded Asia Cup 2025. Shreyas’ chances to make it to the Indian side in T20Is seems difficult before the T20 World Cup 2026.

With the likes of Tilak Varma performing consistently, the middle-order is jam-packed. So to say, Sanju Samson is himself batting out of position to accommodate Shubman Gill at the top, who was made the vice-captain for the tournament. Hence, it is evident that the PBKS captain would not be in the radar for selection for the upcoming T20 World Cup, unless injuries haunt India.

Having said that, the middle-order batter has been delivering consistent performances in ODIs since the World Cup 2023 at home. He had scored 530 runs at an average of 66.25 and was the third-highest run-scorer for the Men in Blue. Shreyas managed two hundreds and three fifties over a span of 11 matches. His strike-rate in ODIs stands at an exact 100, with his average close to 50.

Shreyas can make it count big time in ODI cricket. His performances in the recent past make him the favourite for the No.4 spot in the team. He also performed well in the Champions Trophy 2025, India’s lastest ODI assignment. He held the position for the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, after Rachin Ravindra. Shreyas managed 243 runs off five matches in the tournament.

India will face the West Indies for two Tests at home, starting October 2, before the next ODI series in Australia, starting October 19. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are expected to return to the squad after both announced their Test retirements in May, earlier this year.
