3 Major Weaknesses of RCB Heading into IPL 2025 Season

RCB have a few vulnerable areas, where the opponents can exploit them severely.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) formed a strong unit by buying some quality players during the IPL 2025 auction and filled their squad with match-winners. They have filled most slots and look like a strong unit.

However, RCB still have a few vulnerable areas, where the opponents can exploit them severely. It’s not that they didn’t try covering them, but they still had to settle with slightly poor options.

We look at three areas where RCB are slightly weak heading into IPL 2025.

Devdutt Padikkal’s recent T20 returns

Devdutt Padikkal has done well in red-ball cricket, but his T20 returns haven’t been encouraging, and his recent stints haven’t been fruitful. He was with Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the previous IPL seasons but failed to get going.

At RCB, he is expected to bat at No.3, where his task will be to counter spin, but whether he can do that role remains to be seen. Padikkal will mostly play at his home ground, and that’s the only solace for now.

Injury and form concern in the pace department

RCB’s two lead pacers are Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who are rich in experience. However, Hazlewood is very injury-prone and struggled with fitness lately.

Meanwhile, Bhuvneshwar Kumar doesn’t play much competitive cricket at this level and has been out of the Indian side for a while. There were signs of regression last season when he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and the trend might continue next year.

Lack of a leading wrist-spinner

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have Suyash Sharma as their frontline wrist-spinner, but he hasn’t played enough cricket at this level. There are no doubts over his quality, but whether he can be a genuine lead spinner is unsure.

While playing for KKR, he mostly played in the shadows of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, but the role will be much different in RCB. If the move doesn’t work, RCB can end with a mediocre spin attack since Krunal Pandya is not a wicket-taker.
