While they succeeded in getting a few, CSK were still on the losing side of a few bids and had to let several players go.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were the smartest team in the IPL 2025 auction, for they didn’t run after every player. Instead, they picked their players wisely and went hard for them, trying to get almost everyone they wanted.
While they succeeded in getting a few, CSK were still on the losing side of a few bids and had to let several players go. There were several reasons behind this, the biggest being their tight budget since they had to compile a team with a limited purse.
We look at three players CSK unsuccessfully bid for in the IPL 2025 auction.
Glenn Maxwell would have fitted perfectly in CSK’s setup, for he is a terrific player of spin and bowls useful off-spin. The bidding war started between Sunrsisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Punjab Kings (PBKS), but the former pulled out soon.
Later, the tussle started between CSK and PBKS and lasted until PBKS got him for INR 4.20 crores. CSK tried hard to get him but were compelled to leave him in the end as Maxwell again landed in the same team.

Tushar Deshpande was among the most successful bowlers of CSK in the previous edition. He is a genuine wicket-taker who can move the new ball and bowl in the slog overs.
RR went hard for him and got him, even though CSK tried to get him back. His final price was INR 6.50 crores, and CSK went till INR 6.25 crores but had to back out due to budget issues.
Liam Livingstone would have been another terrific fit in CSK’s setup, for he is a hard-hitter who can bowl off-spin and leg-spin equally well. On Chepauk decks, his bowling variations would have been mighty effective since they offer a bit of turn.
However, his price went out of CSK’s range, and when he came into the set, CSK needed to fill a lot of slots. Hence, they had to leave another quality player at the final moment.
