4 Teams Likely To Target Former RCB Spinner Wanindu Hasaranga In The IPL 2025 Auction

As the IPL 2025 mega auction approaches, franchises are keenly evaluating players who can provide both batting depth and bowling versatility and Sri Lankan and former RCB all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga stands out as a prime candidate due to his exceptional leg-spin bowling and capable lower-order batting. His consistent performances in international cricket have made him a valuable asset in the T20 format.

Hasaranga has established himself as a leading leg-spinner in international cricket, known for his wicket-taking ability and economical bowling. His ability has been evident in recent T20 franchise leagues around the globe, where he has emerged as one of the top wicket-takers overall, showing his skill in high-pressure situations.

Additionally, Hasaranga’s batting provides depth, allowing him to contribute crucial runs in the lower order.

Several IPL teams could benefit from Hasaranga’s all-round capabilities, particularly those seeking to strengthen their spin department and add batting depth.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Chennai Super Kings have a history of valuing quality spinners, especially given the spin-friendly conditions at their home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Hasaranga’s leg-spin would be highly effective on such pitches, providing CSK with a potent weapon in the middle overs.

His ability to bowl economically while taking wickets aligns with CSK’s strategy of building pressure through spin. Moreover, his batting skills offer additional depth, allowing flexibility in the lower order. Acquiring Hasaranga would bolster CSK’s spin attack and add a reliable all-rounder to their lineup.

With Jadeja in their ranks and more spinners being eyed, CSK, with their recent affinity towards Sri Lanka players, might target Hasaranga.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

SRH bought Hasaranga in for the IPL 2024 season, only to see him leave without playing a game due to injury. Hasaranga was bought by Sunrisers for INR 1.5 crore, which was his base price, at the 2024 IPL auction last time.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have traditionally relied on a strong bowling unit, with a focus on spin. Hasaranga’s inclusion would enhance their spin options, complementing their existing bowlers. His experience and success in T20 cricket make him a valuable asset for SRH, especially in controlling the middle overs and providing breakthroughs.

Additionally, his batting ability can add depth to SRH’s lineup, offering a reliable option in the lower order. Given their strategic emphasis on bowling strength, SRH is likely to target Hasaranga to reinforce their squad.

Punjab Kings (PBKS)

Punjab Kings have faced challenges in maintaining a balanced squad in the past, often lacking a quality spinner who can also contribute with the bat. Hasaranga fits this requirement perfectly, bringing in his leg-spin prowess and batting capabilities.

His ability to adapt to different conditions and perform under pressure would be beneficial for PBKS, especially in tight matches. By adding Hasaranga, Punjab Kings can address their need for a reliable spinner and strengthen their lower-order batting, enhancing their overall team balance.

With their big bank balance, PBKS are also better positioned than most teams to splurge and having a leading global leg-spinner might be something that could come very handy for them. They accommodate Sikander Raza in a similar role last few seasons with reasonable success and might aim to give Hasaranga a shot this time.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)

Wanindu Hasaranga was part of RCB in previous seasons but didn’t leave a significant mark, struggling to adapt to the high-scoring conditions at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, much has changed since his last stint.

Hasaranga has gained invaluable experience in international cricket, particularly in handling pressure and adapting his bowling to different surfaces. His recent success in global T20 tournaments and his improved ability to vary pace and trajectory make him better equipped to thrive in the IPL.

Moreover, RCB are likely to focus on their bowling unit this mega IPL 2025 auction and with a stronger focus on spin partnerships, it could give Wanindu Hasaranga the support he lacked earlier. His additional batting contributions would also address the team’s perennial issue of middle and lower-order depth. With these changes in mind, RCB might consider giving Hasaranga another shot in IPL 2025
