4 Teams Likely to Target Jitesh Sharma in IPL 2025 Auction

Jitesh Sharma encountered a dip in form last season but his dual value as a wicketkeeper-batter will keep him in demand in IPL 2025 Auction.

Jitesh Sharma was released by the Punjab Kings (PBKS) ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Primarily an aggressive middle-order batter, Sharma is also very adept at keeping wickets. This dual role will make him quite a popular choice in the upcoming auctions.

Sharma was first picked by the Mumbai Indians in 2016 and retained in 2017, but he did not get a game with them. He was again bought in the IPL 2022 auction by Punjab Kings and he made an impression as a finisher.

In the 2022 season, Sharma scored 234 runs at a strike rate of 163.64, followed by an impressive 2023 season with 309 runs at a strike rate of 156.06. His performances as a finisher earned him his T20I debut. However, the 2024 season saw a dip in his form, managing just 187 runs in 12 matches, which likely influenced PBKS’s decision to release him ahead of the 2025 auction.

This move opens the door for other franchises to acquire his services in the IPL 2025 Auction, recognizing the value he brings as a finisher and a reliable wicketkeeper.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

The Chennai Super Kings have a history of valuing experienced Indian players who can contribute both with the bat and behind the stumps. With MS Dhoni nearing the twilight of his career, CSK is on the lookout for a wicketkeeper-batter who can fill the void.

Jitesh Sharma’s aggressive batting style and proficiency as a wicketkeeper make him a suitable candidate. His ability to finish games aligns with CSK’s strategy of having dependable finishers in their lineup. Moreover, Sharma has expressed his desire to play for CSK, citing his admiration for the franchise and his friendship with Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Mumbai Indians (MI)

Mumbai Indians have released their previous wicketkeeper-batter, Ishan Kishan, ahead of the 2025 auction. This creates a vacancy for a player of Jitesh Sharma’s caliber. Sharma’s previous association with MI, albeit without game time, and his growth since then, make him a viable option.

His ability to accelerate the innings and provide stability in the middle order could be beneficial for MI’s batting lineup. Additionally, Sharma has also expressed interest in rejoining MI if not retained by PBKS, indicating a mutual interest that could materialize in the upcoming auction.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have released their veteran wicketkeeper-batter, Dinesh Karthik, ahead of the 2025 auction as he has announced his retirement. This opens up a spot for a dynamic player like Jitesh Sharma.

RCB’s batting lineup, led by Virat Kohli, could benefit from Sharma’s aggressive batting approach, especially in the middle and death overs. His wicketkeeping skills add value, providing RCB with a dual-role player who can contribute significantly in both departments. Given RCB’s strategy to bolster their middle order and finishing capabilities, Sharma emerges as a strong candidate to fill this role.

Punjab Kings (PBKS)

Despite releasing Jitesh Sharma ahead of the auction, PBKS might consider bringing him back using the Right to Match (RTM) card. His previous performances for the franchise, especially in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, showcased his potential as a finisher.

PBKS’s decision to release him could be a strategic move to re-acquire him at a more economical price. With a substantial purse remaining and the option to use RTM cards, PBKS could aim to retain Sharma’s services, banking on his familiarity with the team’s dynamics and his proven track record.
