4 Teams That Will Challenge RCB to Acquire KL Rahul in IPL 2025 Auction

RCB are the front-runners to acquire KL Rahul in the IPL 2025 Auction but they will need to ward off interest from four other franchises.

KL Rahul’s unexpected release by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the IPL 2025 auction raised many eyebrows. Despite being one of the most consistent performers for LSG and their captain since the team’s inception, the franchise decided to part ways, reportedly due to a strategic overhaul and concerns about Rahul’s batting style and hefty price tag in the retention list.

The move has opened up opportunities for other franchises to bid for the star batter, who remains a marquee name in the tournament.

Rahul’s IPL journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Starting with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2013, he showed his potential as a technically sound batter. After brief stints with RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), he truly flourished during his tenure with Punjab Kings (PBKS), where he transformed into a run machine and emerged as one of the most dependable top-order players in the league.

His time with PBKS also saw him winning the Orange Cap in 2020, as he piled on a staggering 670 runs.

Following a lucrative move to LSG in 2022, Rahul’s performances remained top-notch, consistently amassing over 500 runs in multiple seasons. However, LSG’s inability to cross the playoff hurdle under his leadership and owner Sanjiv Goenka’s spat with him on national television may have contributed to the franchise’s decision to release him.

Now, as he re-enters the auction pool, Rahul is expected to spark a bidding war, with several franchises eager to add his class and experience to their squads. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) look like the front-runners to sign him owing to their substantial auction purse of INR 83 crores and their history with Rahul.

However, there will be four other franchises who will give RCB a tough fight to get Rahul’s signature. Let’s have a look at them.

1. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

The Kolkata Knight Riders have historically been known for their aggressive bidding strategies in IPL auctions. With the 2025 auction approaching, KKR is likely to target KL Rahul to strengthen their top-order batting lineup. Rahul’s ability to anchor the innings and accelerate when needed aligns with KKR’s dynamic playing style.

His experience and leadership qualities could also provide valuable support to the team’s existing leadership group. Moreover, Rahul’s proficiency as a wicketkeeper offers KKR the flexibility to explore various team combinations, enhancing their overall squad depth. They have INR 51 crores left, which will allow them to bid aggressively for at least one player, and Rahul is highly likely to be that one player.

2. Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

With Dhoni’s retirement speculated to be imminent, CSK will be on the lookout for a seasoned batter who can also take on wicket-keeping responsibilities. KL Rahul fits this profile perfectly. His consistent batting performances make him an ideal candidate for CSK in the post-Dhoni era.

Moreover, Rahul’s leadership skills will also be a great asset for Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has taken over as the CSK captain from Dhoni. CSK have an auction purse of INR 55 crorers left, which again gives them ample chance to compete for Rahul’s signature.

3. Gujarat Titans (GT)

Like the other teams, Gujarat Titans are also in need of a wicketkeeper-batter after Wriddhiman Saha’s retirement and Matthew Wade’s release. To address the gaps in their batting lineup, GT is likely to target KL Rahul in the 2025 auction.

Rahul’s extensive experience and proven track record in the IPL make him a valuable asset. His ability to adapt to different match situations and deliver consistent performances could provide the stability and edge GT needs to reclaim their winning momentum.

4. Delhi Capitals (DC)

Delhi Capitals have the third highest available auction purse, standing at INR 73 crores, and they will be also looking for a captain. To overcome this hurdle, DC might look to bolster their squad by acquiring KL Rahul.

Rahul’s ability to play both anchor and aggressor roles makes him a perfect fit for DC’s dynamic batting order. His experience in handling pressure situations could provide the much-needed impetus for DC to become a top team again. Furthermore, Rahul’s inclusion would add depth to DC’s wicket-keeping section. Although they have already retained Abishek Porel, Rahul’s presence always gives them a nice backup.
