With only a few teams retaining wicketkeepers before the auction, many franchises were eager to strengthen their squads by adding these valuable players.
In the IPL 2025 auction, franchises made significant moves to secure key players for the upcoming season. One of the main highlights was the presence of several talented overseas wicketkeeper-batters.
With only a few teams retaining wicketkeepers before the auction, many franchises were eager to strengthen their squads by adding these valuable players. While some of them were bought at high prices, others were acquired at more affordable rates.
Let’s take a look at the five best overseas wicketkeepers picked in the IPL 2025 auction.
Gujarat Titans bought Jos Buttler for INR 15.75 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, following his release by Rajasthan Royals. The England white-ball captain, who had been with RR since 2018, became the highest-paid overseas player of the auction.
Buttler is set to play a key role for Gujarat, not only as a top-order batsman but also as the team’s wicketkeeper. He will likely open the innings alongside Shubman Gill, bringing his extensive experience to bolster the team’s batting strength for the 2025 season.
RCB acquired Phil Salt for INR 11.75 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, following his release by KKR. He played a key role in KKR’s IPL 2024 title win, amassing 435 runs in 12 matches. Salt’s form has made him an important pick for RCB, where he is likely to be a top overseas option.
In the 2025 season, Salt is expected to open the batting alongside Virat Kohli and take on the wicketkeeping duties. His aggressive batting style should suit the Chinnaswamy pitch, known for its small boundaries, enabling him to provide explosive starts and set a solid foundation for RCB’s innings.
Devon Conway has been brought back by CSK for INR 6.25 crore in the IPL 2025 auction after being released before the auction. The New Zealand batter, who has already made an impact at the top of the order for CSK, is likely to take on more responsibility this season. With MS Dhoni as the primary wicketkeeper, Conway could step in as the backup keeper.
Conway’s strong IPL record and his ability to either stabilize or accelerate an innings make him an automatic choice. His return adds further depth to CSK’s top order, providing skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad more freedom to play his natural game.
Kolkata Knight Riders secured Quinton De Kock for INR 3.60 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, following a bidding war with SRH and MI, with KKR emerging as the winning bidder.
Released by LSG ahead of the auction, de Kock is renowned for his explosive starts at the top of the order and excellent wicketkeeping skills. This makes him a valuable addition to KKR at a competitive price, and he is likely to be in the playing XI ahead of Gurbaz.
KKR brought back Rahmanullah Gurbaz for INR 2 crore in the IPL 2025 auction after releasing him prior to the event. Last season, Gurbaz had few opportunities, playing mainly during the playoffs when Phil Salt was unavailable.
With Salt now at RCB and KKR also signing Quinton de Kock, Gurbaz may have to wait for his chance again. However, his ability to play aggressive shots, especially with field restrictions in the first six overs, gives him a good opportunity to make an impact when he gets the chance.
