5 Overseas Spinners who will be in Demand at IPL 2025 Auction

India isn't the only hub for quality spinners anymore. Some skillful overseas spinners will go under the hammer in IPL 2025 auction.

The IPL 2025 mega auction is just around the corner, and teams are preparing to make significant bids for top talent. With franchises allowed to retain only six players, many have chosen to focus on keeping batters, fast bowlers or Indian spinners, leaving a strong group of overseas spinners available for the auction.

Several of these overseas spinners, including newcomers and those who went unsold in previous auctions, are expected to attract a lot of attention. Their potential to strengthen teams’ bowling attacks could trigger intense bidding wars during the auction.

Let’s look at the five overseas spinners who will be in demand at the IPL 2025 auction.

Adam Zampa

Adam Zampa is a skilled Australian leg-spinner, known for his accuracy and variations in limited-overs cricket. His ability to turn leg breaks and googlies sharply makes him an important wicket-taker, especially in T20 games.

Zampa is also consistent in the middle overs, where he effectively controls the game while picking up key wickets. Zampa has played 20 matches in the IPL and taken 29 wickets.

However, franchises should be aware that he missed the 2024 season due to personal reasons, which could be something to consider during the IPL 2025 auction.

Maheesh Theekshana

Maheesh Theekshana was released by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. He joined CSK before the IPL 2022 season and has been a valuable asset for the franchise, taking 25 wickets in 27 matches.

Theekshana is a versatile bowler, effective with both the new ball and in the death overs. His recent form has also been impressive, with strong performances for Sri Lanka in their white-ball series against the West Indies and New Zealand.

Given his consistent performances and all-round skills, Theekshana is expected to attract considerable attention in the auction, with several franchises likely to pursue him. CSK, having retained four capped players and one uncapped player, still have one RTM card, which they could use to bring him back.

Akeal Hosein

Akeal Hosein has been the main spinner for the West Indies in T20 internationals for the past 2-3 years. The left-arm spinner is known for his clever bowling and his ability to perform well in both the powerplay and middle overs.

Hosein played just one match for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023, which remains his only appearance in the tournament.

Last year, he went unsold at the auction, even with a base price of ₹50 lakh. Given his consistent performances and potential, he is expected to attract several franchises attention in the auction.

Noor Ahmad

Gujarat Titans had both Noor Ahmad and Rashid Khan in their squad last season but opted to retain only Rashid and release Noor ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. Noor made his IPL debut with the Titans in 2023 after being purchased for ₹30 lakh in IPL 2022 Auction.

The left-arm wrist spinner impressed in his first season, taking 16 wickets in 13 matches and establishing himself as a key player with his knack for taking important wickets.

In IPL 2024, Noor played 10 matches for Gujarat, collecting 8 wickets. His impressive skill set, including his variations and ability to trouble batters on flat pitches, makes him a promising talent. As a result, several IPL franchises are likely to show interest in him in the auction, given his potential as a left-arm wrist spinner.

Mitchell Santner

Mitchell Santner was released by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2025 Auction. In IPL 2024, Santner played only three matches, as he was often sidelined with Maheesh Theekshana and Ravindra Jadeja being the primary spin options.

Despite limited opportunities in the IPL, the New Zealand all-rounder has remained in good form, having recently picked up 13 wickets in the second Test at Pune against India.

Santner is known for his ability to bowl economically in the middle overs and his handy skills as a lower-order batsman, capable of accelerating when needed. His dual role as both a bowler and batsman makes him a valuable asset in the IPL, where franchises seek players who can contribute in multiple areas. Given his all-round abilities, Santner is expected to attract significant attention in the auction.
