5 Teams that will Target Jos Buttler at the IPL 2025 Auction

Buttler claimed the Orange Cap in IPL 2022, scoring 863 runs and helping Rajasthan reach the final.

It came as a surprise when Rajasthan Royals released Jos Buttler during the retention deadline. Buttler, who joined the franchise in 2018, was a cornerstone of their batting lineup. He claimed the Orange Cap in IPL 2022, scoring 863 runs and helping Rajasthan reach the final.

Buttler is known for his aggressive and versatile batting, capable of accelerating at crucial moments and finishing games. With his experience and track record, he is sure to be a sought-after player in the upcoming auction. In addition to his batting, Buttler’s skills as a wicketkeeper and leader add further value to any team.

With Jos Buttler being released and six players retained, Rajasthan Royals can no longer use the Right to Match (RTM) card to bring him back. Additionally, their limited funds will likely make it challenging to place competitive bids on him in the auction. This opens the door for other franchises to pursue the England star, who has set his base price at INR 2 crores.

Let’s look at the 5 teams that will target Jos Buttler at the IPL 2025 Auction.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Jos Buttler’s aggressive batting style makes him a perfect match for the Eden Gardens pitch, which is known for favouring batters. He has a strong track record at the ground, including a brilliant 107* last season that helped Rajasthan Royals secure a thrilling two-wicket win against KKR.

With Kolkata Knight Riders having released Phil Salt and no RTM (Right to Match) card available, they won’t be able to bring him back. However, adding Buttler to their squad would give KKR a powerful opening pair with Sunil Narine, along with his valuable wicketkeeping skills and leadership qualities.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru

After Faf Du Plessis’ release, RCB will be on the lookout for a reliable opener in the upcoming auction, and Jos Buttler could be the ideal choice. The conditions at the ground are well-suited to Buttler’s aggressive style of play. With Dinesh Karthik having retired, RCB will also be in need of a wicketkeeper, making Buttler even more valuable to the team.

Last season, RCB’s openers struggled to provide quick starts, which put extra pressure on the middle order. However, if RCB bids for Buttler, they can expect explosive starts, which will not only benefit the team but also allow Virat Kohli to play his natural game. With only three players retained and a large purse available, RCB has the resources to target Buttler in the auction.

Chennai Super Kings

One of CSK’s major needs for the IPL 2025 auction is a specialist wicketkeeper. Given that MS Dhoni might not play all the matches, Jos Buttler could be the ideal solution. Buttler is not only one of the best wicketkeepers in the world but also an exceptional fielder, which would allow CSK to keep him active on the field throughout the game. He could also assist Gaikwad with tactical decisions, adding more value to the team.

Last season, CSK struggled when Devon Conway got injured, and apart from Gaikwad, there was a lack of consistency in the batting. Buttler’s explosive batting, especially in the powerplay, could provide the boost CSK needs. His ability to take on any attack and score big runs would be a perfect match for CSK’s needs, especially on flatter pitches outside Chepauk, where his aggressive style would shine.

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings will go into the IPL 2025 mega auction with the chance to rebuild their team, having kept only two uncapped Indian players. With the biggest budget of INR 110.5 crores, they have enough money to make some important signings.

The team is on the lookout for an opening partner for Prabhsimran Singh, a new captain, and a wicketkeeper after releasing Jitesh Sharma. With Jonny Bairstow also released, Buttler could step into his role. This makes Jos Buttler a prime target for Punjab in the auction.

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians have retained their five main players, covering most of their batting lineup. But with Ishan Kishan being released, there’s now an open spot alongside Rohit at the top. Since MI has retained all their capped players, they can’t use an RTM to bring Kishan back.

Jos Buttler could be a great option for MI. He can open the batting and keep wickets, just like Kishan did. Plus, he’s familiar with MI, having made his IPL debut with them in 2016. Signing Buttler would make MI’s top order extremely strong, and an opening pair of Buttler and Rohit would be an exciting prospect for MI fans.
