Ashwin last played for CSK in 2015
Ravichandran Ashwin was released by Rajasthan Royals on the IPL 2025 retention deadline, October 31. Rajasthan chose to retain Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Shimron Hetmyer, and Riyan Parag, reaching the limit of five capped players. This also means they cannot use the Right to Match (RTM) card on Ashwin. As a result, Ashwin and Rajasthan Royals have officially parted ways.
With Ashwin entering the IPL 2025 auction, several teams are likely to bid for him. The Times of India reports that Ashwin has shown interest in returning to CSK. In June, he rejoined India Cements and took on an important role with Superking Ventures, a Chennai Super Kings (CSK) subsidiary.
Ashwin, who debuted for CSK in 2008 and last played for them in 2015, could be a great fit given his local ties, strong relationship with the franchise, and the spin-friendly Chepauk pitch. Ashwin has played 212 IPL matches and taken 180 wickets. Over his career, he has represented five different franchises in the league.
Now let’s look at the two other teams who can challenge CSK for Ashwin at the auction.
Lucknow Super Giants can be a strong contender for Ashwin in the IPL 2025 auction as they look to strengthen their spin department alongside retained off-spinner Ravi Bishnoi. Ashwin’s experience would not only bolster the bowling lineup but also provide valuable mentorship to Bishnoi.
Last year, LSG had Krunal Pandya, Krishnappa Gowtham, Amit Mishra, and M. Siddharth on their team, all of whom have been released by the franchise, although they could consider using the RTM option for Krunal.
Since the Lucknow pitch typically favors spinners, LSG might target Ashwin to build a strong spin partnership along with Bishnoi for the upcoming season.
Gujarat Titans may target Ashwin in the auction to strengthen their spin lineup. With Rashid Khan already leading their spin attack, adding Ashwin’s experience could provide valuable depth. Last season, Gujarat Titans relied on Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmed, and Sai Kishore for their spin attack. However, for IPL 2025, they have retained only Rashid, releasing Noor and Sai Kishore.
They have also retained Shahrukh Khan, who plays for Tamil Nadu and knows Ashwin well. If GT decides to pursue Ashwin, he could not only strengthen their spin department but also help nurture Shahrukh, who bowls part-time spin.
Although GT might consider the RTM option for Noor, Ashwin’s experience could come at a more economical price.
