Delhi Capitals (DC) Retention List for IPL 2025: Predicting Strategy to Retain and Release Players Ahead of Mega Auction

Delhi Capitals (DC) might make a few interesting decisions ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.

Delhi Capitals (DC) might have struggled in the previous cycle, but they had several quality players in their squad. The late addition of a few players in the mini-auction and injury replacements bolstered them further, making the team more balanced than ever.

However, the mega auction will compel them to leave out a few and re-build the squad. They will keep the best ones and must form a solid unit around them that complements retained players well.

Their auction strategy will be interesting, for DC will need to make some tough calls while pinning down their retentions and releases. That’s a problem every team will face, but since DC will need to take calls on some young talents, their task might be slightly harder than a few other sides.

Capped Players in DC Retention List:

Rishabh Pant: Rishabh Pant will definitely be Delhi Capitals’ first retention ahead of the auction. He offers ample value and rightly deserves to be the top retention. A solid pace-hitter, RHB-splitter, wicketkeeper batter, and leader – Pant is everything a team needs.

If he comes into the auction, Pant’s value will be massive, and his price will be higher than the retention slab. Several teams will go after him in the auction, and DC might not be able to get him back. Expect Pant to be the first name on the retention list.

Axar Patel: Axar Patel should be DC’s second retention. Axar is an all-rounder who contributes heavily to all departments. The best part is that his value in any aspect doesn’t reduce due to the Impact Player rule.

He is a spin-hitter who can be flexible with his batting position and bat anywhere the team wants. Further, he is among the best defensive white-ball bowlers who can bowl tight lines and restrict batters with accuracy. What else does a team want?

Kuldeep Yadav: Delhi Capitals are lucky to have two of the finest spinners in the country. Kuldeep is easily the best wrist spinner in India, a genuine wicket-taker. He will be a massive threat in the middle overs.

Teams want a crafty wrist spinner, and if Kuldeep comes into the auction, he will break the bank. He can easily be kept in one of the retention slots and should ensure no dispute regarding the retention salary. Ideally, DC should give him the desired amount, given he is at his peak and will be a long-term investment for the side.

Tristan Stubbs: Among the finest young talents, Tristan Stubbs should be a must-retention for DC. Stubbs is a terrific player of pace and spin and can bat anywhere in the order. Doing the tough role of a finisher, he stood apart from his competitors, striking at a whopping 297.33.

Tristan is a complete package, given he can bowl and keep wickets. He is only 24 and will serve them for years, making him a long-term investment. After his recent heroics, his IPL value will surge massively in the auction, so DC should avoid bringing him to the auction.

Uncapped Player in DC Retention List:

Abishek Porel: Abishek Porel has been among the most exciting young players in the past two years in the league. He is a terrific player of pace and can be flexible with his batting position. He can open the innings or bat in the middle order according to the requirement.

Further, Porel is also a wicketkeeper and is quite safe behind the sticks. After a terrific IPL 2024, his value will surge multifold in the auction. Instead, DC should simply spend INR 4 crores and keep him for another cycle because Porel is a match-winner and will only improve from here on.

Notable Exclusions:

Prithvi Shaw: Delhi Capitals invested so much in Prithvi Shaw, but he couldn’t fetch expected returns. His performances in the previous cycle went from bad to worse with each season. Even his recent form has blown hot and cold.

There’s no proper reason to spend a retention slot and a huge purse on him at this stage. His IPL price won’t be very high this time, so if DC want, they can get him at a lower sum. Expect DC to release him.

Jake Fraser-McGurk: Jake Fraser-McGurk was among the best batters in the previous edition. However, DC might still release him for multiple reasons. Firstly, he is very young and raw at the moment, and investing in a new overseas player who has yet to prove his consistency might backfire.

Further, his IPL price won’t be exaggeratingly high like Tristan Stubbs for the same reason. He is a quality player, but DC can get him at a lower price in the auction. His price surely won’t be as high as the retention slab, especially in a mega auction where the player pool is large.

Mitchell Marsh: Another massive underperformer for DC, Mitchell Marsh is set to be released by the Capitals. His performances are the biggest reasons for his exclusion. Despite being an all-rounder, Marsh didn’t succeed enough in any department.

Further, he has injury issues, and being the captain of Australia, his availability will also be a concern in future. He went home midway through the season in 2024. It’s not wise to invest so much in an injury-prone player who hasn’t done anything significant.

Anrich Nortje: Like Prithvi Shaw, DC also retained Anrich Nortje before the last mega auction, but he couldn’t churn consistent performances. He erred his lines and lengths massively and conceded too many most of the time. His frequent injuries are another reason not to use a retention slot.

His value will not be as high as in the previous editions after his recent downfall. He won’t fetch anywhere close to the retention slab. With more players available in the auction, DC can opt for alternatives.
