Delhi Capitals Remove India Legend from IPL Role: Big Changes Ahead of IPL 2025 Mega Auction

Delhi Capitals have decided to remove Sourav Ganguly from his current IPL role. He will now oversee the women's team and SA20 franchise.

Delhi Capitals have made significant changes to their setup ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, marking the end of Sourav Ganguly’s involvement with the franchise’s men’s team as the Director of Cricket. As per a Times of India Report, the former India captain will now transition to overseeing the women’s teams, both in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and the Pretoria Capitals in SA20.

In a major reshuffle, former India cricketer Venugopal Rao has been appointed as the new Director of Cricket for the Delhi Capitals men’s team.

“Sourav Ganguly will no longer be part of the men’s team operations in the IPL. His new role as Women’s Director of Cricket will focus on the WPL team and Pretoria Capitals,” a source was quoted as saying by TOI.

This shift represents a turning point for Ganguly, who has been associated with men’s cricket in various capacities for decades. After stepping down from his role as BCCI President, Ganguly took over as Director of Cricket for Delhi Capitals but was keen to assume a dual role as head coach and director for the men’s team after Ricky Ponting’s departure as coach, a move that did not materialize.

Ganguly’s future in global cricket governance also appears to be under scrutiny, with his role as the Chair of the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee possibly coming to an end later this year as the international body undergoes its own overhaul.

Delhi Capitals Finalise Retentions

With the upcoming IPL mega auction, Delhi Capitals are making moves to solidify their squad. The franchise has retained key players like Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav, while they may use the Right-to-Match (RTM) card to re-sign some of their other core players.

Pant, however, remains a point of discussion, with his future as captain in doubt. A team insider hinted at the uncertainty, telling TOI, “The ball is in Pant’s court now, whether he wants to continue as captain or just a player.”

In addition to these changes, the Capitals are weighing the option of retaining promising uncapped player Abhishek Porel, who impressed during the last season. No final decisions have been made regarding his future with the team.

With preparations for the mega auction in full swing, Delhi Capitals plan to hold trials next week at three different venues, with the selection process being impacted by the ongoing Ranji Trophy. While other franchises, like Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals, have completed their trials, Delhi Capitals are pressed for time as they finalize their plans ahead of the November auction.
