Discarded KKR star makes big statement before IPL 2025 auction with a record double ton in Ranji Trophy

He has been in rich vein of form lately.

A dynamic Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) star, who wasn’t retained by the franchise ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) auction, made a resounding statement with his batting display in the ongoing Ranji Trophy.

Talented right-hander Shreyas Iyer, who led the KKR franchise to their third IPL title last season, however, wasn’t retained by the Shahrukh Khan co-owned team. Nevertheless, Iyer is doing everything right to drive up his stocks ahead of the mega-auction by slamming a record double century during the match between Mumbai and Odisha.

Shreyas hit a career-best double ton with a 228-ball 233, a knock that included 24 fours and as many as nine sixes. In the process, he registered his best-ever First-Class double century since an unbeaten 202 against Australia ahead of the 2017-18 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Mumbai. This was also the 29-year-old’s first Ranji Trophy double hundred for Mumbai in 9 years.

This was Shreyas’ back-to-back tons, after registering a deft knock of 142 in the last match against Maharashtra.

Shreyas Iyer has been in rich vein of form lately

Iyer has been in outstanding form recently. Despite this, he was not selected for the recent home series, where India defeated Bangladesh 2-0 but fell to New Zealand 0-3. He was also passed over for the upcoming Test series against Australia and wasn’t chosen for the India A squad that is currently competing in a two-match unofficial Test series against Australia A.

Iyer last represented India in the three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka three months ago, which India lost. His most recent Test appearance was against England earlier this year, where he scored 27 and 29 in Visakhapatnam. At present, his Test record stands at 811 runs at an average of 36.86 across 14 matches, including one century and five half-centuries.

As India’s Test team begins a period of transition, Iyer will be eager to have a strong season to strengthen his case for a return to the side.
